Easy answer is definitely BMC A series.
Lots of easily available parts to make it competitive. Cheap, and plentiful even on this side of the pond.

A 948 BMC engine done to the 9's still has no way to stay with anything else in that group.  Even a 1275 all done won't stay with the back of the field.  The old motorcycle based formula 500 running Norton and JA Prestwitch  engines would give it a dice. But that's about it.

In reply to NOT A TA :

You're probably right. It's just that $300 has always been my buying point. While not there •••• yet!    The worst part about it is the condition the bodies pieces are in.  ( and that Saab engine )

Body  work is free for me. I even Have an English wheel  to save all the bondo work.

The goal posts are moving, but I have a hard time believing a 150hp engine wouldn't be competitive.
What would your hp goal be with another OHV engine?

Fiat 850 motors  rev up pretty high with good HP for the size ,

and they are a small motor  .......but they run backwards unless you change the cam !

Can you just cut a Jag 2.4 from a MkII in half and have a 1200cc 3cyl?  That would be unique.

What you really need to do is just ship the whole project to me as I love two strokes.

If you're really serious about it I'll give him a call. But be forewarned it's a mostly use it for patterns type a project. The body is a mess,  no race track damage just garage and storage damage.
Salvageable because of my English wheel and body experiance.

How is the frame and suspension? Got pictures? Is it currently complete (less body of course)?

Are larger motors that have been reduced to 1100 legal?
Triumph Standard 1147 destroked to 1100?

Could use Spitfire 1147 Mk I/II dual SU HS2, headers, loads of cams and other goodies available.

Keith  duckworth and  cosworth developed formula jr engines using the engine  in the 59 to 67 Ford anglia. Lotus used this engine in their 18 jr race cars.

Don't like the sound of them?

Half of the engines mentioned otherwise sound like wet farts compared to these things.

Finish the Jag!

In reply to clshore :

Yes de-stroked engines were permitted, but nothing could out perform the Ford 105E in 998CC form as tuned by Cosworth. Also 1 liter Juniors were legally lighter than the 1100CC cars. The first year of the class (before the 105E) Fiat, BMC and DKW engines were pretty equal. De-stroked Triumph and Peugeot were tried.

Harley engine?

I know it's only a two cylinder, but it does have a distinctive sound.

Suitable for a source for patterns. Not useable as is.  The right front took a hard hit.  It's been sitting in a barn up against the wall with bird ( chicken? ) poop causing rust.  The steering rack is too long so it would have caused bad bump steer which tells me the handling probably needs a lot of work to get it right.  It's a Morris Minor  rack  so it would have been extremely simple to narrow.  The fact that wasn't done tells me he wasn't a budding Colin Chapman

Yes you're right. I must finish the Jag First and then the MGuar  at least I have the important bits for those two. And it's just labor at this point.
