I need to buy a new HANS compatible helmet, and it would make sense to get a Snell 2010 rated one vs a 2005. Does anyone know when the upgraded ratings come out? No ads I've looked at have referenced newer Snell ratings yet.

From what I have read.... mid year. Something about the ratings not being fully finalized and I have NO doubts its also to help the member companies sell more of their older helmets... the ratings/specs are driving by the manufacturer. Thus why H&N SFI for the most part = Hans... they basically wrote the spec... nice or sales eh?

I'm playing the waiting game also. I had heard that it was initially due to be implemented October 2009, but it had been rolled back to October 2010 due to waffling on the standard. hopefully manufacturers will get a handle on the standard and start producing helmets prior to this.

They are making Snell 2010 radically different from the past helmets. I read a pretty in-depth article on it a few months ago when I was helmet shopping as well. Basically they've figured out you need the helmet to be a little "soft" on the initial hit, kinda like a crumple zone on a car.

The SA2005 helmets didn't show up until mid-2005 either.

So, if I have the option to keep using loaners for the first few events of the season, should I hold off buying my own lid, or get a nice G-force Hybrid for $200 now?

now that there's a new standard, how long will SA/K2005 rated helmets still be legal? I feel like getting a helmet would be a wise investment since I do want to try autoXing soon after I get my license, but I don't really want to wait until october to get a SA/K2010 rated helmet

I was down at CV Products to pick up a cheap helmet to hold me over and the salesman told me to expect the SA 2010 in October. Somewhere else I heard Spring of '11, but that seems excessively late, more so than now. Who knows. What I want to know is why hardly anyone offers a forced air helmet. Bell is the only one with many of them. I've been looking at Sparco lately, but I'll have to see what they've got in SA2010 when its out.

in my experience if it is only an autox it is very easy to borrow a helmet or rent one from the anctioning body

My SA2000 helmet was pretty beat up, so I bought a new Bell Sport-3 SA2005 last month.

Just FYI, it was pre-drilled for my HANS device.
