I need a new helmet for AX/drag racing/track days. My old one is a G-Force and I liked it well enough. Anything I should be test fitting?

2015 not needed for SCCA autoX ... you've got a long time before the 2005 goes out ... and there was something in a resent FastTrack that I seem to remember extending the 2000 helmet

as for drag racing (of which I know very little) and track days, a 2010 will be fine for the next 5 ys (again I'm speaking of track days rules, not drag racing) ... that will allow the supply of 2015's to stabilize

and while full face is usually required for track days, open face is fine for autoX

As long as my Snell M2005 can still be used for autoX I'm happy.

My helmet has been through 10 seasons and got dropped at my last event, it's overdue for replacement. I figured if I was buying a new one, I might as well get maximum years out of it. And yes, it needs to be full face and either 2010 or 2015 or SFI for drag racing.

For me, any motorsports activity that warrants a helmet and I'll go full face. I don't want blunt force trauma or incineration in that area any more than the back of my head, even if it is better looking than the front. Looking forward to the article. I'm in the market for the lightest SA2015 helmet for ~$600. Or a fire sale on SA2010s.

In reply to Tyler H:

I like the open face for my autoX .. but even if it weren't required I'd want closed face for track stuff

just to me I feel more comfortable open face in autoX .. don't feel the need of full coverage, and like the extra vision ... would rather the protection of full face when on track

You can get an SA2010 Bell M4 for around $100 off nowadays. I'm a fan of mine. Super-extended sizing!

After 15 year of autocross, I'm still not sure why helmets are required, other than tradition.

I bought this one. For your basic trackday and autocross, its fantastic. Really comfortable and really well made. Best deal I've seen on a 2015 helmet thats not complete junk.

I've seen 4 accidents at autocrosses over the years (one was my own car) and each one would have been much worse without helmets. There was also an event where an Elise spun into the timing lights at the finish. It kicked up the box that the timing light was in as well as the brick inside to hold it in place, and struck the passenger in the cheek area of his helmet. He was ok but it cracked his helmet. No helmet and it could have been a serious head injury.

And personally, after watching the video of my buddy smashing my car up, a head/neck restraint isn't a bad idea either.

Don't mean to threadjack, but I'm kinda in the market now too since I'll be getting back into autocross this season.

I'm assuming the SA2010 are getting cheaper now that the SA2015's are out. Any good websites you would recommend for shopping for helmets?
