As Stefan said, if you just want a reliable car to drive and not put any work into, a turbo Miata may not be for you.  If your starting point was a clean, well maintained car and a top-to-bottom kit like Keith’s FM2 kit, OK.  That’s not what you have here.

Time = money.  You could probably have a decently reliable, fun car for the cost of a few crimp connectors and a good tune.  You’ll have to put the time in.  I’m 90% sure that your issues are in the tune, not in the car itself.  The resources are out there, but it takes work.  If you don’t have the time, you can pay to have someone help you with the tune.  Once the tune is right, you just drive it and forget about it.

Your absolutely right. It was built by a guy I know, it was thoughtfully planned out, but some of the execution of assembly was...

anyway, I’m sure I can fix the wiring issues, that doesn’t bother me, but there is a lot of stuff I’d like to disassemble and redo, and if that’s the case I should probably reassemble it all on my very solid 1.8 swapped NA.

Keith, as I understand from flyin miatas 1.8 swap write up, which I followed when I did the swap, essentially if it’s electronic it’s 1.6, and if it’s mechanical it’s 1.8, so I’d need a 1.6 MAF tied into the intake somehow?  And a voodoo box when it comes off backorder?

Thanks everyone!  I may have what is otherwise a decently nice 81,000 mile NON turbo Miata for sale lol

Something to remember is that a misfire will show as a lean mixture - since the sensor senses O2.  A rich misfire can show “lean” on the O2 sensor.

Yeah, you want to know about the fuel conditions just before the misfire. Although it would have to be pretty darn lean to manifest at cruise.

Joey, you are correct. The stock 1.6 ECU will require an AFM. If it’s a BEGI manifold, you can probably use our 1.6 Stage 1 intake setup. A shot of the turbo and manifold will help me determine that.

 Ok!

Does this show what you need?  I think it is begi stuff.

Thanks!

That is definitely BEGi. Can't say I've seen all of those tricks before, but you can't miss Corky's engineering style. That is also quite the freestyle wiring job.

I think our 1.6 intake would almost definitely work with that. I'd want to confirm the ID of the pipe that's connected to the compressor inlet and the slightly different turbo location of a 1.8 may require a bit of fine-tuning to get the intake to fit, but it's mostly silicone so that should work out. You'll have to move the bypass valve back to the intake side but again, not  a big deal.

In other words, if you decide to transfer this over to the swapped car and run a Voodoo Box, I think we'll be able to support that decision with parts.

great!  What’s the part I’m looking for for the intake?  I just browsed the online catalog and didn’t see it.  Thanks for your help, I think this may be the route I’ll take

It's not listed individually on the site right now, but it's going online soon. It's the pre-turbo part of this:

Ok, would I then not use the weird looking crossover pipe?

Also, I imagine your not sure exactly, but do you know roughly what the pre turbo intake parts cost?  Are we talking a hundred dollar piece of tubing, or something a bit more pricey?

That crossover pipe is interesting.

Keits picture has an intercooler plumbed in, so you don't have a crossover pipe like yours.

Mine has an intercooler as well, maybe it’s recirculating bypass thing instead of a blow off valve?

The 1.38" crossover pipe is for the bypass valve, yes. The one in my picture has a vent to atmosphere blowoff - not something we recommend on an AFM or MAF based system as they let in unmetered air at idle and cruise. The compressor inlet pipe has a big noodle coming off it for that purpose, although we may use a different diameter than Corky did.

The parts required are 22-40215, 22-50500, 05-90000 and 05-16070. Total MSRP is $181 if I'm reading things right. That includes a new air filter, if you want to reuse yours that knocks a few bucks off.

Oh nice!  Perfect. That’s not bad at all. I guess we are just waiting on the voodoo box... any idea when it will be off back order?

We should have them soon. I'm out of the office today so I can't check to get anything more accurate, but I've overheard conversations that we're not expecting to wait long.
