So I'm a young guy who can't stop thinking about wanting to become a racecar driver. I live near Jacksonville so I figured why not send Hurley Haywood of Brumos Porsche an email asking for some advice about my future. I really didn't even expect a response.
To my absolute astonishment, he emailed me back asking me to come by the office today and talk about my future and check out their racecars. I could barely contain myself!
Gladly skipping school I put on a professional attire and got to Jax an hour early (hey can't risk a flat tire stopping this meeting haha).
Actually walking into his office and meeting him was surreal. After seeing him all over the internet for years, it blew me away to be chatting with him in front of me. Wonderful, vintage pictures of racecars he'd driven adorned the walls. A proud "Porsche-Stuttgart" shield sat high on his bookshelf, a wonderful accent that gave me goosebumps sitting in that office.
Apart from the wonderful conversation about racing back in his day and all it's grandeur, what I learned was about what I expected. I've found my passion too late in life and don't come from a wealthy enough background to have any realistic chance of becoming a professional racecar driver in my lifetime. And I'm pretty freakin' tall too which doesn't help a bit. Understood. I certainly respect the high level of competition in motorsport in my day and age and the numbers game that follows. He didn't crush all my hopes of dreams though of course. Oh no. Far from it. You see, he opened my eyes as to the other ways to get into the seat. He helped my realize that I need to focus my efforts on furthering my education, establishing a sustainable and adequate source of income, and then my time will come to prove myself on the track. The cutthroat nature of the industry scares me a little at first but then makes me love it that much more. I love a challenge. I learn about myself when I am challenged. I live for a challenge.
As if that wasn't amazing enough, we drove over to the team garage afterwards and he showed me around and introduced me to some of the Brumos Racing Team leaders.
And then....... he began opening the door. A sign that said "No pictures" and "Jacksonville's best kept secret."
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
I don't want to elaborate too much but it was the most amazing collection of vintage Porsche/Brumos racecars and Concours de elegance winning cars I will probably ever see in my life. And hey, I got to sign my name on his guestbook right next to Magnus Walker. I can die happy now.
Thank you Mr. Haywood for being down to earth and remembering the little guy. You made my year and have ignited a new fire within me that burns with an intensity words cannot describe.
