I'm excited to hear your thoughts on the new one. If it turns out as good as they say, I'll be looking at a new one once the second year is released.

Yeah, I will saying buying a first year does make me a little nervous.
I was about to run down and order a new Maverick from Ford. But then I decided I really need to wait until I've driven one. This "shortage" is only temporary. Even if it's not temporary, I can wait. I know you've already owned a Frisbee but $30k is a big chunk of cash or debt. I'd really want to drive it first.

Thankfully the deposit is refundable, so if I drive it and somehow don't like what's mostly the same car with sticky tires, a better stereo, and more power from the factory.....I can just let them keep it and get my money back.
This or an ND are my short list in a "come into money" situation. I don't have high hopes, but the want is real. Watching to see how you like it.

I hear you. Allegedly, Maverick deposits are refundable too. But after all the nonsense dealers are pulling right now due to "shortages," I don't want to be in a position to have to ask a dealer for my money. I have friends and family that ask me to help them find cars. This past year has seen a peak in dealer E36 M3 behavior.
I'd strongly advise you not to put yourself in that position too, but I'm also 99.73% sure you are all in. I hope it exceeds your expectations and look forward to the updates.

Buuuuuuttttttt you said you really want a Supra. So i say wait and save and next year you get what you want. Since you don't need anything right now anyway, it seems logical.

I also feel this is the last period of time in history when we'll be able to choose between 2 cheap, manual, 4-cylinder, N/A, non-hybrid, non-electrified, sub-3000 lb sports cars. So if not now, then when?
How soon are your dealers saying they can get you a '22? Miata inventory is pretty limited right now.
He said Oct/Nov. So I think realistically it would be Nov/Dec.
In my heart of hearts, I really want a Supra. I think they are dead sexy. But I'd likely have to go the next year without a car to save up to keep it reasonable.
I think if you haven't test driven a Supra yet, you should do that. Find out whether the car is worth waiting for. That could make your decision for you. The price difference isn't that great for a fun car, and I bet the Supra holds its value well.

Considering your recent experiences with modern, turbocharged BMWs, I'm surprised you'd consider a Supra. It just seems like a slightly curvier version of your 135 to me.
I'm honestly surprised that nobody's suggested foregoing the new BRZ and buying ten Biturbos instead. We're definitely slacking.

I know. The B58 seems to be a much more robust engine than the N55, for what it's worth, and I'd get an extended warranty.
I'll never buy a first model year car. I won't even buy a second model year car. It takes several years for them to figure out what they screwed up, the aftermarket to come up with solutions, etc, etc...

You are correct. I thought about it more this morning as I was taking a shower, I decided against putting down a deposit on one.
I thought the same as you, "How much of a PITA are they going to make it to get my money back if I change my mind?"

Meanwhile the business analysts have already used sales projections based on the first 20 months of sales to decide if the investment will be made in the 4 year process to develop a new generation.

That's their problem, not mine. I don't want to be any companies beta tester without getting paid to do so.

You have no idea how close I was to driving to Ford and doing the same for a Maverick. I mean I was eyeing the dealership next to my house, and then I had this thought. I've been lied to by so many dealers this past year when trying to help my mother in law and a family friend who's truck was totaled I lost count. I really think this "shortage" will pass. Heck I noticed once I get outside of Dallas, the shortage seems far less severe too. OKC had tons more inventory on the dealer lots, but we have record numbers of people moving to Dallas stressing all our systems including car dealers.
I really want to see and drive the new Frisbee too, because I've enjoyed my mundane Impreza at rallycross.
Going to be hard to find one to test drive if the demand is anywhere close to the original frisbees. Of course, if you are willing to wait that is probably the better option.
Id love a new 86 but a new car isnt in the cards at this point.
From what I hear the '22 BRZ and GR86 are again tuned with a difference like from the original '13-'14 BRZ & FR-S release - from '15 onward the first gen tuning between the two got closer and closer... until they were virtually identical in feel. All the driving impressions just released a day ago really interesting on the GR86... seems to be perfectly neutral with even better rotation and stability than the first gen 86s. Though not in the market for another one, I am intrigued by the second gen GR86 and would love to drive one to see how it compares to the original. Really liked my '13 FR-S, especially once got it sorted out with solid mounts, bracing, and proper wheel & tire setup.
Nice compilation of all the GR86 first drives:
1. Because for less than 1/2 the $$, if you can turn a wrench you can get a nice used one with a blown motor & turbo K swap it & be much, much faster, better, cooler, more reliable than the new one. But this takes commitment, savings & lots of effort so most just hit the easy payment button.
2. The new Z will be a much faster, cooler machine.
3. Subaru motors suck big time (in my life any way).
4. Buying any new car is way stupid, with payments even more, unless you are in a great financial position & lots of cash.

If no one bought new cars, you cheap whiners wouldn't have anything to buy used.
And then complain about buying new cars is dumb, then wonder why manufacturers only make trucks and CUV/SUVs anymore.
The irony is astounding.

"Tell me why I shouldn't do this" ----> Then arguing with the respondents.
Irony indeed. :-)
Buying brand new cars is typically regarded a pretty bad financial decision unless you are in a great position (which you may well be). Nothing new there.

This is a bit too close to "wrench shaming" in my book. Plus, the monetary calculation (half the money) is only correct if your time is worth less than zero. You rightly point out the commitment necessary, which is probably more than it takes to keep a Biturbo running.
Not all of us want to design a car from first principles on Saturday so we can drive to work on Monday.

Wording might need a little work. It's the OPs money, so implicitly calling the OP "stupid" for doing what he/she wants with their money is a) a bit off and b) unnecessary.
And as someone else already pointed out, it's hard to have used cars if no new cars are being bought.

Well calling me stupid was unnecessary. Typically when people are insulted for no reason, they don't take kindly to it.
And yes, if I wasn't in a comfortable position to buy a new car, I wouldn't.
