So, I just moved to Southern Maryland and I'm curious about what there is to do around here automotively. I'm interested in autocross and rallycross, though I would like to check out VIR eventually. I haven't done anything in motorsports other than autox years ago. Suggestions?

DC Region SCCA has active autocross and rallycross programs.
Capitol Driving Club has additional lower key events with a variety of DC area venues, as well as several other clubs around DC (Porsche club, Mercedes Club, Autocrossers Inc.) Big SCCA events are at FedEx Field (semi-eastern DC)
Summit Point, worth going to, they have some spectator events throught the year. (Closer than VIR)
Indoor Karting at Allsports GP (Sterling VA area) and Autobahn (Columbia MD area)
The DC auto show is going on right now.
DCR has an active rally-x program that will be exploring new sites this year (others here can tell you more about it)

How far southern?
DC AutoX runs at fedex field in landover, MD. (Starts mid march expect actual dates announcement soon)

Autocrossers Inc (A DC region chapter club) runs in Waldorf, MD.

DC SCCA RallyX lost the summit point event site but has a few sites we are looking at in the greater DC area.
You can contact me if you need more details on any of those and I can either help or at least point you in the right direction.
Most people call "Southern MD" south of DC (at least to my experience)

Well, you learn something new everyday
In my defense, I only got here 3 weeks ago.
So, Autobahn indoor karting is in your backyard! http://www.autobahnspeed.com/
Only been once on a saturday, I would suggest being there at 10am when they open. Otherwise it can be a few hour wait to get in a kart. Remember to limber up!

Yeah, it is actually really near me. It looks like they do an adult karting league on weeknights. I might have to get into that!
Allow me to suggest a good resturant if your into beer and good food http://www.friscogrille.com/index.php Should also be really near you then.
I am flying into BWI on Thursday for a few days. My must do's involve food. Crab Cakes at Pampas and Pit Beef at a Chaps on Rt 40. If I had time I would go to the Air and Space Museum.
summit point is a little less then 2 hours away from you (out 70 west to 340 south/west). Summit host rallysprints (cage required), NASA and SCCA open trackdays, time trials and club racing. NJMP is also closer then VIR.
In reply to ls1fiero:
food advise, for crab cakes, and great steaks as well, try Jimmy's famous on Holabird Ave.
In reply to Apexcarver:
YES! the food is as good as the beer selection (american fare)
Crabcakes?
G&M Seafood in Linthicum, near BWI.
I promise you won't regret it.

The crab cakes are HUGE at G&M. Apex, thanks for the food tip.
Cross the street and try them at Olive Grove as well. Then you can join in the local piss'n contest about which ones are better.
Southern Maryland starts roughly at the bottom of Anne Arundel county. Pretty well extinct now, due to urbanization.
If you want to feel "rich" Annapolis is the ticket.
If you want to get shot go to Greenmount Ave. in eastern Baltimore city.
If you want to see DC take the metro (I usually go to the forest glen station being close to the beltway and plenty of parking)
I think the best crabs are right next to me at Conrads crabs (a ways away for you though)
There are tons of venues around either city for music, DC has the 9:30 club witch is awesome as hell if you like rock.
There is a metric ton of stuff to do.

When I was getting out of autocrossing in 2007-ish, it was pretty easy to run every or every other weekend from March to late September.
There were/are two kart tracks. One is in northeastern Maryland (Sandy Hook Speedway north of Bel Air) that runs sprint and oval track karts and one on the eastern shore (Nicholson Raceway in Chestertown) that runs just sprint karts. Both are dominated by 4 strokes.
There's several dirt ovals.
Several drag strips (Captiol Raceway, Maryland Internation Raceway aka MIR) 75-80, Mason-Dixon, and Cecil County), all of which are very busy on weekends. Summit, VIR, NJMP, and half dozen other tracks are less than a day's tow or drive away.
Lots of fantastic motorcycle roads and rides in the region, dirt and pavement. Budds Creek MX, Hatfield McCoy trail system just over the border in WV, thousands of miles of twisty back roads, dirt roads, and trails if you go looking.
Then there's all of the other crap there is to do in Maryland or the surrounding states... And the best seafood in the country.
If only the politics were a little less ridiculous, I could probably find a way to afford to move back one day... this thread is making me nostalgic.
If you go to G & M DO NOT park at the grocery store across the street! Not even for takeout. No matter how quick you will be. They have a must have a tow truck staged there with how quick they show. Got the wife. (Expensive crabcake!)
Check out the cruise at Marley Station in Glen Burnie, right off of 100. Then hit Ann's for a double dog with everything right next to the mall.

If you're close to Conrad's, you're not far from me, and around the corner from my son.
Neat! May have to grab some brews one of these days.
Whatever you do, stay away from Suitland, the peaceful village where my office is located
