Y'all are getting a little ahead of me here, it was just a "1st step" phone interview!

Now, if I have another interview, or they for some odd reason offer me a job, well, then, I'll be going back through this thread with a fine tooth comb!

We shall see.

The sun in the summer can be strong, and folks are lazy with waxing their cars--- so paint fade is common.--- 1.a They also have less octane in their gas something to do with the altitude, or environmental issues, as Denver had horrible smog problems into the 90s. (might still)--- ------ 2. A slower car can be frustrating heading up into the mountains, but coming down is still fun! (provided you have good brakes, if not....it can be terrifying!) Yes, your car will be noticeably slower. Everything is slower though, so you kind of get used to it. When you head back to sea level your car will feel FAST! I remember my 87 Cressida was a dog at altitude, but at Sea Level it could chirp the tires under the right circumstances. What drove me out of CO? Life changes, a lack of water, and high cost of living. ------ 3. Denver is basically a high desert, so nearly all lakes / ponds are man-made reservoirs. The streams are nice, and decent for trout fishing, but overall, it's a very dry place. Stock up on skin lotion, and chapstick--- especially in Winter. When I first lived there, the cost of living wasn't bad, but they then had a boom, and prices doubled within 6 months or so. Keep in mind Denver has always been a "boom town". In the 80's it was oil, then in the 90's it was tech. When these industries explode, costs go up......way up. When a 1,000 sq ft place in a decent (but not opulent) area was closing in on $300K, I left for more bang for the buck. ------ 4. I have friends that live in Aurora. It's a pretty unremarkable suburban part of town. The cost of living was always lower in Aurora--- probably because it's not really near anything but homes and strip malls. Downtown Denver is only 20 min away though. ------ 5. Traffic does suck.....badly, but they have expanded the Light Rail, so it's actually useful now. They also have those funky rental bikes everywhere---- but they aren't optimal for the Winter. That said, you plan around rush hour when you live in the Denver metro area. Just don't bother trying to get anywhere from 3-6pm. If you do, surface streets can help once you know your way around. Still sucks though. I found Denver itself to be an Ok, but not a great city. The magic of Denver is it's proximity to the mountains. Denver isn't actually in the mountains, it's at the base of the Rockies. Depending on where you live in the city, you can get to the mountains in 20-60 minutes. It's very, very nice up there----- God's country!

I thought I'd offer the following to Dr. Gearin's thoughts, though:

  1. I'm in Tucson - I know all about strong summers! 1.a I'm jealous when people talk about using 93 octane gas - 91 is it here....
  2. I guess driving the Miata up Mt. Lemmon is practice enough - though above 5000ft, the power loss doesn't seem THAT significant, so maybe I won't notice as much as some others do....
  3. See #1; though there is a dearth of places with water in Tucson, man made or not....
  4. I'm ok with this - lower cost of living and close to strip malls is fine. Close to strip clubs would be problematic (when your wife's heroine is Lorena Bobbit... no further explanation needed).
  5. I lived in and still visit SoCal. I've yet to find traffic anywhere except Mexico that scared/impressed me (some fools tried to say DC traffic was worse... pfft. No.)

The traffic in Denver isn't scary. It's no Atlanta or LA. It just clogs up at rush hour. I find driving the truck and trailer through Denver at rush hour to be a pain, but I've never felt I was going to end up with a minivan mounted to the push bar the way I do pretty much constantly in SoCal.

And 11am on a Saturday.

And 1pm on a Tuesday.

And 12:30am on a Sunday.

The traffic sucks, that's about it. I'm biased though, having been here my whole life.

Traffic? TRAFFIC?

Come to Philly. Our main highway has 2 lanes each direction. Want to see pain? Go through Conshohocken on 76 at any time of day. No way it can be worse anywhere else.

I'm in Durango at 6500 right now on vacation in my NA Miata. It is gutless up here. The speed limit on some of these mountain highways is 65 and I can barely get there in 4th or 3rd. I can floor it in 4th uphill at 65 and not accelerate. It's otherworldly to my Floridian self.

Good to see you're used to high desert living--- if that's the case, you'll be fine in Denver. The Traffic around Denver sucks, but it's way better than L.A. Considering your wife's heroine, you may want to keep on driving when you see the signs for the Diamond Cabaret, and Shotgun Willies! Although Shotgun Willies was mentioned in Motley Crue's "Girls Girls Girls" so it may be worth checking out.........from a strictly historical perspective of course!

Wait 'till you get to Independence Pass...

NA Miatae, especially 1.6 cars won't be happy with elevation without compensation.

That said, CO has some of the finest driving roads around. Not to mention all the other outdoor fantasticness. Which is why we love to visit, and may even retire there, assuming the immigrants from CA don't ruin the place first.
