I have a line on a pretty cool, 84 Carerra. Always wanted a Porsche. Hardtop, manual seats, gray market so simpler without so much stuff. Always amazed at how much info on Rennlist and Pelican parts, you can rebuild everything with their help, even the ECU. PCA seems like a great group.

But my buddy and wife are leaning towards a newer C5 Corvette. Modern car, AC works, abs, and much easier to drive fast. At least my buddies Z06 was, easiest fast car I ever took on track.

Autox, Track days, beach runs sometimes.

So thoughts?

Something about the AC 911's of the '80's really lures me in. Even though the Vettes are faster, more powerful, and cheaper, they don't quite have the allure of a 911.

Go with the 911. You won't be disappointed. I've never driven a car with as much soul as a good air cooled porsche.

Grey market means it could be hacked up though when it went through DOT. Door bars, Cat, etc.

C5 Corvettes are still depreciating; there will be plenty of opportunities to buy one later.

911 Carreras seem to be appreciating, and given their older age it is more difficult to find a good one.

Dwnshift I'm kinda agreeing with you, there will always be another vette. But 911's are rapidly climbing out of reach. As long as I get a good ppi, and don't put it stern first into a wall, I can get it out of my system and not lose money.

Split the difference and get a 928.

not really the same. Definitely not anywhere close to the 911.

^ That. I LOVE my 964 - I grin every time I drive it. It's not as capable as a Z06, and it's 'harder' to drive right...but it's pretty rewarding. I'm still trying to get used to how early I can apply power coming out of a corner.

911's are appreciating, and have a back seat. For me, that second part was a big part of the decision...and now that I have one, I'm actually getting attached to it! (not something I've been accused of in the past with my cars!)

I respect the argument for the 911. Based on David's experience with his, it seems wise to budget for some costly unexpecteds. If not a worry for you, buy the 911 and have a ball. If I'm spending my own money, I'd address the high-g oiling and go with a Corvette.

I used to tho k that the vette would be cheaper. Then a buddy with a z06 had to have the trans replaced when he thought it was just a clutch. After that a failed valve spring lead to a new engine. Them there was the wired deal where the abs would cycle all the brakes while driving. Big mystery, replaced abs brain twice , even a possible window switch. Finally seemed like it was rain related, good thing he lives in Reno. Moral any thing will give you fits.

On the other hand, the engine rebuild on Andy's ex seems not uncommon.

Having driven all 3 I will say the 911 is the next one for me once the current miata is finished for my wife. The sounds the engine makes, the direct communication from the car...ahhhhhhhhhh It's been months since I drove the 911, and I still get a bit giddy thinking about my 20 min drive in it. Been wanting a classic for a daily for awhile now, an 80's AC 911 seems like the way to go.
