The stereo in my 924s has been bugging me ever since I got it. It was nice an aftermarket JVC unit that I think I paid next to nothing for. At the time the OE radio had been removed due to the track use only nature of the car I was just thrilled to have tunes. BUT as time went on It became apparent that operating it while I was in 1st third or fith was a nuisance. Tuning the stations was next to impossible when I was in fith and I could not see the readout. (cruzing on the highway and wanting to tune the radio ment I had to drop to 4th to operate the controls easier and so i could see the display.)
So, I was at the junk yard and they have a stack of used radios all tested good. I found a sony unit that had the same plug as the JVC I had but all the controls are on the drivers side of the radio making it much easier to use.
And to top it off I figured out why I have been getting so much ignition noise in the AM band. At some point I had wired the VDO suppercomp tachometer to the same power source as the radio. Daaaaaaaa. (insert palm to forehead here)
It is so nice to be able to reach the radio and tune the stations and actually here it with out all that ignition noise.
All because I took the time to look at all the radios that they had and select one that worked from an ergonomic standpoint. Since I am getting old and my hearing has been damaged from years of racing and tuning race motors with out hearing protection I don't need a great stereo system I just want to have music and listen to the traffic reports on the way to work so the fact that it is not the greatest stereo is just fine with me. All you kids out there use hearing protection or you will have problems later. Trust me on this.
Anyway I just wanted to share. I am very pleased with my junk yard score and the fact that it was basically a plug and play made it all that better.

Ayup. I'm somewhat fortunate in that I don't seem to have any loss of range, but it's been a while since I knew what silence sounds like.

Agreed. Two years in a Freightliner M2 followed by 5 years in a machine shop = deef. Oops. Asking people to speak up at 29 sucks.

Leaning in and turning your head to the "good" side. I know I've lost some range.

Not much to add, but I liked reading this one. Good job on a number of levels.
I see your lips moving...but do your vocal chords work?
Oh, did you know the stereo plugs were the same or did you get lucky?
Jack Donaghy: How's production going, Trey?
Tracy Jordan: Good, and there's a lot of buzz. Can you hear it too, or is my tinnitus acting up?

Both. Kind of. I had narrowed it down to three of the about 30 head units that they had on the shelf due the layout of the controls and then weeding out the no name cheap ones. I had it down to a sony, another JVC and a kenwood. I then looked at the back of the sony unit and was surprised to see that the plug in the back of the sony unit looked identical to the JVC unit I had in the car. Infact all the plugs in the back of the two units are identical. I am betting that they were either made by the same manufacturer or were manufactured for the same cars. The sony I got had noted on it that it came from a subaru written on the tag. One of the great things about this junk yard is that they pull all the sterio units with the plug and about 12 inches of wire.
So Ya I got lucky that they had a unit with the same plug but once I saw this it was the deciding factor to pick the sony from the three that I had narrowed it down to.
