And much greater repercussions from getting it wrong.

There's a thunderstorm out tonight, and I'm preparing to commute home... on a sport bike. That's one case where the advantage goes to cars. I'm also a bit too chicken to try riding the bike at 9/10ths... the consequences for accidentally riding it at 11/10ths are a lot higher than in a car.

OTOH, it probably means something that I knew there was a decent chance of a thunderstorm and I rode in anyway.

So true how a bike can make you power hungry, I went from GS500 to a FZR600 then to my current bike an FZ1000, probably way more power than I ever need and I really have no where to wring the thing to 10/10ths but the 44mpg and handling make it my daily driver.

Contrary to most riders I actually like to ride in the rain, I carry my rain suit with me at all times just in case.

Yeah the 'arms race' thing is the problem with bikes. Once you've experienced the rush of a modern-ish sportbike you will never be able to get it out of your head (or at least I'm not). After getting back into riding bikes I kind of lost my passion for driving fast in four wheels. Everything happens so freakin' slowly in a car - even an Evo feels neutered somehow.

I hope that my first bike will either be Motard inspired or something similar...I can't get into the raw power of a sportbike. It scares me.

I've always felt that I'd be way more comfortable in an uncontrollably powerful car than a powerful motorcycle.

I hope to keep my motorcycles in the "fun under speed limit" category. We'll see. KNB13 (my buddy) just bought a CBR 600 F4i.

Riding in the rain will teach you a lot, and you can actually do a lot more in the rain than you'd imagine. I'm into sport touring so my next bike will most likely have vtec, and 800cc's of V4 goodness I don't think I'll ever own a liter bike though a bike like the Goldwing with nearly 2 liters get's me in such a weird way.

Both. It's 2 different things. I've got an e36 M3 for auto-x and track days, a Sprite for when you want a very small car, and motards @ 72, 400, and 950cc. And a hotted up scooter. And a kart.

Bikes lean, so the lateral G thing that makes cars cool isn't there. Then again, using up your knee pucks (or back tire while backing it in) is there.

I road raced bikes for years, and got OK good at it, but I find I have much more natural talent at cars. I'll ride forever though. And drive.

I read an article about so-called "unavoidable accidedents" and they had a motorcycle with like training wheels on it to see how much rain and loose gravel affect a riders stability in a sudden sharp turn situation. They concluded that the bike has good enough traction in the rain to do the sudden turn manuever, but loose gravel on tarmac is a real dangerous situation if you have to make a sudded sharp turn. I think the situation in the rain was mental while the situation in gravel was physical. This was in a magazine so hell if I know if it is a correct conclusion.

I've almost crashed twice in the rain by hitting the white strip and having the front tire go it's own way and crashed once by hitting a moist indicator strip with the rear tire around a sharp curve. The scariest situation I've been in was coming around a fast sloping curve playing "catchup" with a sports bike and I got into the "ball bearings" on the side of a divided road with cars behind me. The bike started fishtailing, but I bit my lip and got back onto the road. I think most of motorcycle riding is mental, if you look and think about where you want to go you'll go that way, but if you become fixated on a point and loose the curve and think you are going to crash you just might!
