Where would be the best place to get one? The original one lasted about 370k miles, then I replaced it with a $100 rebuilt bosch one that was failing before it even had 20k miles on it and now its totally dead. I was just going to get a junkyard one, but they appear to differ by year, engine size and transmission type, and only about one out of every 20 or so 1996 2.2s are 5 speeds (in other words I can't find one). Does anyone know of a good source for quality replacements or where to get a used one? A used one would be nice since idk how long I will be keeping this car, it still works fine other than that but with 410k miles idk how much someone is going to want to pay for it.
try a local starter/ alt shop and see if they can rebuilt it for you.
Plan B. Take it apart and fit new brushes. With a good cleaning it may work again....
Denso right? Get a solenoid contact kit and it will probably work again. Alternator bearing failure and abuse related burn ups aside, Japanese starters usually just need contacts, and alternators just need brushes.
Weird that the Bosch died so quickly, I've had good luck with their reman starters.
Just a quick look around online shows remans by Denso at RockAuto for $102+core, and factory remans from Subaru at subarupartsforyou.com(I'm sure there's cheaper somewhere) for $199+core.
Aside: it was you that had all the trouble with reman alternators, correct? Next time it dies, go to the dealer(no, I'll never say that again)! Factory remans are only $72, mine is just now about ready for another after 13 years on this unit. It's still charging just fine but the rear bearing is abit tired.

Yeah it was, after I think the 4th warranty replacement on the kragens alternator it has been ok now, I actually found an almost brand new looking alternator with a sticker on it that said it was rebuilt for Subaru at the junkyard for $16 a year ago so I will try that if the current one fails.
