I'm picturing a steampunk build for one of my cars, and I'm trying to figure out how I could do the paint.
I'm kinda picturing something along the lines of "aged bronze" or something. As in the main paint being black gloss or flat I haven't decided. And the on hard lines of the car have the bronze/brass color show through.
I'm probably a good while away from actually doing any paint, but brainstorming anyway...
I would layer black over brass paints, then lightly sand the high lines to expose the brass layer. I've done it on scale models.
I immediately thought of this car
It is a paint with ground up copper in it. Which he promptly through a bucket of some sort of oxidizer over.
Make sure you use a marker or something to make the larger body panel appear to be smaller panels, and then rivets, the “gaps” between the small faux panels you make need so,e airbrushed shadowing to create an aged and stressed look. And don’t forget the rivets.

Black with Brass accents is definitely the way to go. If you can incorporate visuals with mechanical things like gears, linkages, etc that will add to the steampunk vibe too. This is my favorite steampunk ride:

Copper rattle will work, though that copper bmw is brilliant.
I feel like there are different levels of steampunkiness you could do- are we talking "clean" steampunk with accents here or there, or is this thing going to look like a berkeleying time machine prototype from a century ago?
If the second one, a decent amount of the body could be covered by other things, like cloth wrapped wiring, linkages, or exposed copper tubing radiators:

That's basically what I was thinking.

That's neat! In my case, I still want the car to be primarily black. Funny though, this is an e30, and I'm planning to do this steampunk project on my e28!

Not sure if sarcastic or.... lol
It can be cool, it can be overdone. We'll see what I decide.
In reply to STM317 :
That thing is pretty cool looking! Classy and steampunk!

The project would be on my e28. I don't think I'll be covering the outside in stuff like you mentioned, I think I'm going to try to keep it kind of classy still. We'll see. All neat ideas though! Might incorporate some of that for the interior.

Just look for 1880's train paint schemes.

Kinda blurs the lines between steampunk, Mad Max and rat rod, but the rivets following the character lines and bronze finishes are useful

You could just use real copper.
Suddenly I'm reminded of the AC Cobra with the body hand-formed out of sheets of bare copper.

Also awesome! Too flashy for me, but still cool.
About the Affliction Chevelle:
The paint is a metal patina that was created by acid- washing the car and staining it as you would furniture. You wipe the stain on and wipe it off; the more you use, the darker the car becomes.
This seems like a neat idea, since you could sort of build it up until it looks the way you want.
I've had good luck using Rustoleum Hammered finnish on my streampunk NERF blasters. Copper and bronze work great. If you are looking for a worn finish, spray multiple coats of copper, then sa bronze topcoat. Use 500-1000 grit sandpaper and wear through the bronze exposing the copper basecoat. Replace exposed hardware (screws, nuts, bolts, etc...) with brass equivalents. You can artificially age brass with Liver of Sulphur. Be careful, that stuffs nasty. Black or a dark blue paint looks great with copper.

I love everything about this. That gauge setup is the coolest E36 M3 ever.

Appleseed, you need a thread showing those...
I'll be working on a build for a buddy after the holidays. Will be sure to take pictures and start a build thread.

The craftsmanship is pretty darn impressive.
