There is another solution that nobody has mentioned. We are adults. Why can we not choose for ourselves whether we want an explosive device pointed at our face? The proper palette of choice includes an airbag delete option for these retrofits, and the ability to order a new car without such nannies.
Rather than continue to allow unelected bureaucrats to demand more and more "safety" equipment be installed on cars (while simultaneously insisting these now-heavier cars burn less fuel), why not focus such effort on creating more competent drivers? Real driver training and proper skills testing would eliminate many of the wrecks without imposing undue economic burdens on those of us who have worked hard to hone our driving skills, and have a working understanding of probability.
