Hi guys. My Miata has a 2.5" or 3.0" downpipe (cant remember without measuring) and it is rattling against the underbody and sometimes the transmission. The rattle is most prevalent at higher RPMs. Its a bit of an annoying rattle, so I thought why not get rid of the rattle. Well, there isn't much in how I can create clearance for the downpipe to not rattle. I can't beat in the downpipe either since it is rattling right on the weld and on the flex pipe. One thing I've done before is wrapping the areas where its rattling with exhaust wrap and that usually helps, although not sure how good a solution it is. So, just wanted to ask, how do you guys deal with rattles where clearancing isn't much of an option? Is there some product that I can use as a "cushion" to get rid of the metal on metal contact?
You can dent the underbody :) Or you can move the engine slightly by shimming an engine mount - or, if you don't know how old the mounts are, fresh ones.
I'm assuming you've already tried realigning, but just in case - the first step is to loosen off all bolts in the exhaust system and start tightening them up as you work your way back.
A chunk of silicone tubing can be used as a pad, but you'll still get noise transmission.

Thanks! I will try beating on the underbody with a sledge and see what I can do there. I installed fresh Mazda performance motor mounts when I had the engine out, so all good there! Did try realigning as well. Looks like the transmission is going to be the more annoying part. So much fun, lol!
