We are looking at downsizing and realized we wouldn't have the basement storage for our summer tires.  Does anyone have any practical experience with cold weather storage of 200tw tires?  I have always stored them in winter so I don't know if performance or life of the tire is affected?  I'm in Maine, so it doesn't get super cold that much, but we are below freezing for sure.

Let me know?

Thanks,

Doc

Cold is not as bad as heat.

Sunshine is not good.   I'd set them at cold pressures, bag them in black plastic bags, getting as much air out of bag as possible.    Wait til spring.

If you must store them in subzero temperatures, make sure nothing causes them to flex while cold and ideally keep as much weight off them as possible. Usually sticky tires can survive simply being stored in subzero temperatures as long as they aren't flexed, because the flexing at those temperatures is what causes them to crack. Still bag them up as you would for indoor storage.

It's pretty common for shops in colder climates to offer tire storage services or a storage & mounting deal, but they're certainly not cheap.

Thanks for the info gents.  So are you saying not to store them on a tire rack, that type of pressure of flex?  I've talked with some guys who like stacking them better than on tire racks.   Crazy when I think back to years ago just wanting a garage, now I have one but also a big enough basement that I can store tires for almost as many cars as I'd like.  I'm not looking forward to downsizing, but it will also mean more money for car shenanigans.

For storing in subzero temperatures I'd say that a horizontal tire rack would be safer than stacking, since there's less pressure on the tires to start with and less potential for a tire to spring back to shape (and crack) if something shifts.
