Anyone ever built one or seen one in person?
My 10-yo son pointed it out to me from the back of a Popular Mechanics magazine. Their kit prices seem a bit high but I am intrigued overall.

$4k, then you have to build it... out of WOOD and attach a LAWNMOWER ENGINE!?
A used quad will eat it's lunch, no assembly required. You can find one that comes with AWD, plow and a real engine for oh... about 4k. You will look 100% less ridiculous riding it too.
Was this a recent issue of Popular Mechanics? Struck was advertising those things in the magazine back in the 1960s, along with a little bulldozer kit. I didn't realize they were still around.
You can build that way cheaper than $4k I think you could make one for $500. Thats not a bad price to build something with your kid.
Let's see...I think I'll build a WOODEN car, and drive it in the RIVER.
You can't make this stuff up.

that one has a small electric outboard on the back.. so I bet it floats. He also has the doors "boarded up"

Yeah, it's not like they would build boats out of wood or anything.

It's not like anyone ever has to replace decks or transoms.
A quick (and lazy on my part) search found some Jeep CJ2A's from $1300-7000. A father-son project on a real Jeep could be fun too.

As long as you keep it away from salt water and everything is painted in a good enamal or an oil based (preferably oil based) paint.. it should be fine for the occasional foray into the drink. Boats around here spend entire seasons in saltwater
How about an all-metal mini-jeep body for a grand?

Put a Quad drivetrain under it and annoy the neighbors.

I'm not saying it doesn't work. I'm just saying it's neither foolproof nor devoid of limitations. I like wooden boats. No matter how up on maintenance you are with it though, wood + water will eventually lead to something, somewhere rotting.
