I friend of mine has a '98 Legacy Outback, I'm pretty sure that it has a 2.5.

He bought parts for a tune up, then saw how hard it was to get at the plugs and decided that he'd rather have me do it. The problem is that I've never touched a Subie engine.

It does look like the space between the shock towers and spark plugs is tight. Any tips or tricks to make this easier? Thanks.

The back pair are the PITA.

You have to try a combination of spark plug socket, short extension, u joint, ratchet or ratcheting wrench until you find what works for you.

I had a 97 and it took me 3 1/2 hours.

I assume it's a dohc, that you pulled out the battery, and the wires have been pulled. Put a spark plug socket on a 4" extension and put that on the plug. THEN put the ratchet on the extension and break the plug loose. As soon as the plug is loose take the ratchet off and unscrew the plug by hand.

DOHC are only turbo models unless it's a 90s 2.5.

Pull the airbox and washer fluid resevoir(just flop it up on the strut tower out of the way, don't disconnect everything), should give you all the clearance you need.
