Anybody know how to test a Subaru throttle position sensor? My 2005 Legacy 2.5i Limited just lit its CEL. I checked the code and got P0700 and P1714, which I believe is "Throttle position sensor power circuit for automatic transmission". Not sure what to do next.

The P0700 is on because of the P1714.

Unfortunately the P1714 is a pain in the butt. There is a short or fault in the sensor, wiring, or associated ground somewhere between the transmission, TCM, and the gas pedal.

Since a short is fairly doubtful, do I just assume that the sensor is bad? Is it something the you can get at to clean up the connections or is it the kind of thing that either works or doesn't work and needs replacement?

Using a live data scanner or multimeter(preferably analog, or a scope) on the output line, slowly move the throttle though its range of motion with the key on, should be a smooth transition, any jumpiness, dead spots, etc=fail.

I pulled the e-throttle off my 07 Impreza with a blown motor, before I scrapped the engine.

Woody you can have it for shipping cost if you need it.

In regards to repacing the sensor (or the entire throttle body) - is the '05 Legacy thottle by wire or the old throttle cable style?
There was a change over in there somewhere. I think it was '04 to '05 for the Forester, not sure on the Legacy.

05 leggy was the first Subaru throttle by wire

In reply to NGTD:

I appreciate that offer. I am moments away from pulling off the old sensor and giving it a good cleaning. It that doesn't work, I'll take you up on that.

I would start with what Sr. Kenny said. This sensor can fail completely, sorta work, work, or sorta not work. You really have to see how it works in real time. They don't usually get dirty being in the passenger compartment unless the car has or has had a rodent or some other random issue.
