so, yeah...

I'm not going to get to make it this year.  Someone in the family had a medical situation arise, which means I need to stay home until after OneLap starts.  Don't worry, they're doing very well.  So far, it looks like we've managed to find someone to jump into the seat for me... and I've hopefully sorted through hotels stuff.

I'm not sure I quite have the words to describe the rollercoaster of the last few days, nor how I feel about it.

I hope the best for everybody... y'all'll be in my thoughts.

My deepest sympathies!  Sure, to your family member but mostly sympathy to you.  So much "looking forward to" and then to not be able to go.  I understand the loss.

One thing I've been a bit behind in talking about, is that my co-driver is Marlon Sumlin.  He's fairly well known around the Great Lakes NASA region.  He recently lost his wife to cancer, after (iirc) an 8-year battle.  Through that, he developed a relationship with FORCE - Facing Hereditary Cancer Empowered, and is raising money to support them and their mission, because they provided him and his wife a lot of support over their journey.

In addition, FORCE has done a lot to advance tests/screening for hereditary cancers, and Marlon has seen benefits within his family and track community in determining people's cancer risk, and performing preventive treatments to reduce their risk ahead of time.

I've lost people in the past to cancer, and had others have their own battles against it.  We talk frequently about risk on-track, and the steps we take to bring it into acceptable levels... so it seems straightforward to me to have the same discussion in/around our health more generally.

So, keep an eye out for the Mazda2, and please consider making a donation yourself (I think Marlon has some stickers to hand out for a donation, if you see him in person).

So, I just bought tires and booked an appointment to have them installed at the tire rack facility on saturday morning.

Watching everyone skidpad while you get tires installed? SWEET.

Looking forward to seeing everyone there!

well, every once in a while, OneLap throws curve balls ontop of curve balls.  Family is doing better, things are looking okay... so it looks like I'm headed to the start after all... leaving in the next hour or so.

Here's one a bit later.  This thing is 75% racecar.

I'm a little behind the curve, but Marlon and I are on the same page:  just happy to be here, and we're going to take each challenge in stride and make it work.

It's cold and windy in South Bend. The fast guys are already heading to Grissom and we're just now turning the Kia on to warm it up. Going to be a bit until Bob gets to drive his circles. Leaving an event last will be a recurring theme throughout the week.

A grid walk video from Pete, Spacecadet...

https://www.facebook.com/peter.v.lindberg/videos/1057173681865185/?sfnsn=mo

At about the 7 minute mark he shows the Rabbit GTI. True insanity. 3500+ miles with no hvac, no insulation, no sound deadening, and only 100% removable windows. It's gonna be hot down south!

Scuttlebutt says Scott&Becky in the Mazda2 Mooncake nabbed 2nd overall on the WetSkid Pad.

Pete I think came in second in class, followed by Bob and then Marlon.  More later after real times/scores are posted.

Right now the focus is getting to Grissom.

Any of the Sundae Cup cars cost less than the entry fee?  I wonder if it's possible to do OneLap for less than the entry fee all-in between the car and lodging...

The key to the sort of camping you're talking about is to ask forgiveness rather than permission.

You know I have a $500 Miata with turbo and nitrous.  I'm also not shy about letting people I trust borrow stuff.

Update:  2nd, 34th (Pete & Erik), 51st (Bob & Seth), 67th (Marlon & Sleepyhead).

Great job by all, solid first showing especially by my Lap Puppy Marlon.  67th out of 84 is no mean feat your first time out!

I'll just pick a number and call Becky's Mazda 2 a $10k car.  At 2nd place, it beat cars costing 30 times more dollars!!!!

A lot of Pro-drivers beaten too!!!

The Sundae cars were not encumbered by horsepower overload.
