Hello all - The wife's 2013 Equinox AWD V6 with ~170k has an intermittant issue with the brakes. Car spent a significant amount of time in Michigan and New York winters but is not in Texas. When it is hot outdoors (95*F+) the car will slowly develop a significant shimmy on the front passenger wheel. From her description, it's not as bad as a jeep death wobble, but the steering wheel shakes as if the wheel is significantly out of balance.

The brake rotor gets hot when this is occuring to the point of smoking if it takes too long to get off the road. I've had her try turning off traction/stability control on dash which did not make a difference but did not have her pull the fuse. After 5 to 10 minutes cooling down the car will drive without issue, although at times the issue will reoccur.

She took it to a mechanic who recommended replacing the caliper (along with pads, etc.) but who didn't appear to do any diagnosis other than looking at the rotor and determining it had "superheated". I am a little concerned that there is a seperate issue (debris in the brake line or similar) but haven't run into this issue before.

Does the hive have an opinion on whether replacing the caliper is the correct approach? Will be replacing the other components but want to make sure there's nothing I'm missing.

Thanks!

Can be pads hanging up in bracket, piston hanging up in caliper, or brake hose developing an internal restriction that doesn't allow pressure to fully release.

Thanks! I will do some more inspection on the car when it gets home.

Pads hanging up in the bracket is super super common, at least here.  Honda used to have cleaning and relubing the pad contact areas a 7500mi service.  If it spent time in salt country, some Texan might not know what to do other than hang parts at it until you go away smiley

It's on my list to check, but i did the front brakes about 6k ago and know they were well lubricated then.

Working on this car has definitely made me thankful for my nice uncorroded Texas cars.
