I'm replacing a tail light on my Sentra, and found some black goop around the back of the old lens. What is that stuff, and what should I use on the new lens? Would plain old RTV work? I tried searching for tail light sealant, but couldn't find anything.
The black goop probably is RTV...it works.
I have used a soft rubber/asphalt like material that I bought on a roll. You pull off the waxed paper and it molds to shape and is sticky on both sides. I don't know who makes it or where to buy it but it works better then RTV as you can remove the lens at a later date where RTV "glues' the light in place and you could end up breaking it to remove it. It stays soft for years!
Butyl Rubber Tape is what the factorys use. Try any marine or RV store even McMaster sells it. Sometime called putty tape

3M 08578 Strip Caulk or 3M 08611 5/16th Window Weld. Either one works for what you need.
I remember when I had my Hyundai Tiburon.. the headlights and tailights were held together with some sort of heat sensitive sealant. It was nice, you could make the lights in the oven around 150 to 175 degrees for about 10 minutes and carefully pry the lenses off.. and then reheat and put them back on
