1999 Legacy Outback. 194K miles, engine is a '96 w/160K. New clutch, Head gasket, timing belt, and water pump. Loaded and clean, only rust is a few nickle size bubbles on the rear wheel wells. Price is $1800, but I know the seller and my fiance is a friend of the family. Acctually she bought her 2 civics from him and he has cut her good deals on both.

This would be the new DD and the neon will be my toy.

I once owned a near-new 2001 Outback that handled like Garfield after a jumbo serving of lasagne and was painfully slow even with the 5-speed manual.

To each his own. I do hear that they are fairly reliable.

In reply to 93celicaGT2:

My fiance owned a 2000 that was a dead ringer for your car, except that it had the OEM gold wheels. Tough as nails, reliable, and decently easy to work on. But my gawd it was slow. I mean, couldn't get out of it's own way kind of slow.

Although our dog associates the sound of the 2.5 boxer with us. If one of is taking him for a walk and if that vintage of outback/legacy is a block away, he perks up at the "diggy-diggy-diggy-diggy" sound thinking that it's the other one of us driving to meet him.

You could always make the claim that you're lesbian trapped in a man's body. That would explain your attraction to her and Subarus.

The '96 engine is a phase 1 ( assuming it too is a 2.5 ) and they are prone to internal coolant leaks which means coolant in the oil, unless it was a preventive HG change. If it was a leaker then I would proceed with caution.

I'd probably go for it either way, though, even with the high miles.

Who says 'you' would be 'buying' 'another' 'car'?

You see it all depends on what the definition of the word 'is' is...

The way I see it, you could have your GF purchase a small suv (since that's what Subaru now calls their wagons) by putting it in her name. That way you didn't buy another car, she did, and it's not a car, it's an suv, so you don't have 'another' car, my logic is flawless...

Get it, drive it, break it, and swap it. Then Rally X/Auto X/ road race/drag race/hill climb it . That's what the natural progression is for N/A Subarus.

We just sold our '99 Outback. It was a very good car.

In the year that we had it, it only needed a window switch and a battery. The car had 183k miles on it.

Between my parent's 1997 and my friend's 1997 GT:

  • 1 unknown engine failure before the parents bought the GT (60k miles or so). New engine.
  • 1 siezed engine due to internal oiling problems (just over 60k miles).New engine.
  • 1 bad replacement engine out of the box. Another new engine.
  • 1 blown head gasket at around 100k miles on the engine. Repair cost at the dealer approximately equal to the value of the car

So, one of them is still running well enough on its third engine. The other was sold for the cost of the most recent repairs.

Cool cars to look at and to drive, but I personally was underwhelmed with the reliability.

I think I need to see if I can take it for a test drive. 2 years ago I test drove a 2.2L '95 outback and was disapointed with 2 things, shifter feel and drivetrain noise.

'96 Impreza 2.2 sold at 217,000 miles. Other than a crank sensor and a worn out ignition switch, only maintenance until the a/c broke (why we sold it).

Currently running a '02 Forester 2.5. Yep, had the HG's done. Some check engine light nonsense on occasion but so far nothing else. Has around 130,000 on it now.

HG failures, yes. Complete engine failures on non-turbos? Can't say I've heard of any.

I have eVil intentions for that car. STi struts figure prominently. So do Volk TE37s in gold.
