Good suggestion. If you don't want to crew for a team, the Targa is often looking for volunteers to help run timing, etc. You'll get a different view of the race depending on how you take part. Crewing will be a lot more intense, I expect!

Does Targa use ham radio operators for course communications? The U.S. and Canada have reciprocal license agreements, so my license is good there... :)

Doubt I can make it, just throwing the question out there for general discussion. I've had a blast working radio for the New England Forest Rally, a bit closer to home...

Actually, they do. Or they did a couple of years ago. Some of the villages visited are very remote.

yes I did post last year. I think it was a few months prior to the event in September.

All of my rentals include minor damage and this is listed in the contract. Intermediate damage is as simple as getting 2 autobody quotes for repairs and the renter pays the lowest. Or an agreement between the two parties car be made. Major damage is considered a "write-off" and a write-off price is listed in the contract. So basically the contract details most senerios.

That said, I haven't had a rental car "wrote-off" as yet or even any heavy damage. Mostly minor damage happens and thats included in the rental price. However WE wrote-off one of our CRX's ourselves in 2004.

This Targa event is 6 days long, over 1600 miles and 45 performance stages all on asphalt. Its truely the iron-man of motorsport. So those that have rented my cars in the past come here with a good plan of attack. Most are just amature road racers. Some have some TSD rally experience, some only Solo or Autocross. But they all seem to have one thing in common. That old cliche, to finish first, first you must finish; this is so true. Its a long hard week. During the first 2 days, the base times are pretty easy to beat. All you need to do is drive semi aggressively and you'll beat your base times. As the week progresses, the base "window" gets smaller & smaller making it harder to beat your times. By Friday, you really need to have your game face on and drive it has hard as you can. The smart thing to do, is take a little "time" and bring it across the finish line in one piece.

Referring to myself, "any dumb stump" can drive a car fast, but a good navigator is paramount in keeping the driver slow & fast enough to finish the stage without issue. So those that have had a few TSD rallies under their belt, can do this Targa event as long as they can handle the high speed. A good test would be for the potential navigator to sit in the passenger seat and read a book while doing a lapping event with a buddy. That will give you a good indication if your stomach can handle it.

I really like the slower town stages. They are so much fun - its nuts.

Anyway, for those that wish to volunteer, it takes about 2200 volunteers to put on this world-class event. All are welcome and you will travel to an amazing place like no other. The organizers are always looking for team leaders that have some rally comunication skills.

$7-9K depending on which vehicle. Yes this is not a cheap event.

A little slow in response - sorry.

1.) you need a Targa Class Legal car (or not, if you want to do the Touring class which is simply a TSD rally) 2.) you need an approved race licence (SCCA, NASA, FIA, ASN, etc) again if just doing the Touring class you just need State driver's licence. You can take the Performance Rally School 2 days before the event to obtain a licence. Details are on the targanewfoundland.com website. 3.) There are lots of on-line places to find a navigator. You can advertise on the Targa forum http://www.targanewfoundland.com/phpBB2/index.php?sid=f74731c0ea04d0c030956b6459518e31 or on the specialstage.com forum (or even this forum) you don't need an experienced navigator to do this rally. There have been many first-timers in this event, including myself. No pace notes. You are given a route book for each day of competition with all the necessary route instructions - its not rocket science. 4.) The desire and ability to enter the "iron man" of motorsports and compete with 120 others from all around the world. Race across one of the worlds truly amazing places.
