I have a penchant for trying to do things in a difficult and unconventional manner. And I've had this terrible idea in my head ever since I read the rules for the SCCA CAM class. Specifically the allowance of pickup trucks. A 73-87 GM shortbed in particular. Should be able to get very close to the 3000# minimum weight, has plenty of room for big meats and I've always wanted one.

Also I very much want to rally cross. I got to thinking those same big wheelwells that will swallow those wide meats will also be big enough to allow for some very aggressive off road tires even with moderate lowering.

I know it wouldn't excel at either discipline, after all it's a pickup truck. But something about this idea has really struck a nerve with me and I've been obsessing over it for a couple weeks now.

I'm not sure if they would let it rallycross but I'm hoping they will.

I've built this thing a thousand times in my head and I'm not sure if I can resist this one.

It's a stupid idea. Do it. Start a build thread. Inspiration:

Not stupid at all. Stupid fun is what it could be. You're going in knowing that it won't be the pick to win nationals, but there are enough parts out there and enough canvas that I think it will be entertaining

I had a 78 when I was younger. To a 16 yo, it handled like a dream, was faster than superman and could leap ditches like a deer.

For some reason it would bend ball joints on a regular basis.

Definitely build it. I wouldn't be surprised to find they build a fiberglass front end for it.

That might be one good way to get it under the weight limit.

I've found weight numbers around 3300 or so pounds for stock trucks with very few options. Aluminum engine components, lightweight wheels and fiberglass body parts should get it at or below the limit.

I've owned an 86 GMC but it was a longbed. Dad had a 76 GMC stepside he nicknamed honeybell. I think I'd like a step side to pay homage to honeybell.

and a cool thing would be is that you could probably lighten the truck enough that a built 305 would rock in it

Me too as far as the GM trucks go, but my first vehicle was an 89 comanche, 2wd 4.0 with the 5 speed

Autocrossing and rallycrossing is for fun, so it's a good idea to go with the vehicle you want, even if it won't be competitive. I would also think that trucks are encouraged for rallycross unless they're lifted full size trucks since they're supposed to be capable of driving off-road without breaking or banging off the ground.

You can get fiberglass everything for the 73-87 GM trucks..... Even entire cabs. It would be cool to use the flared baja style fenders and bedsides, which would also allow you to run massive tires.
