This happened to me as well. I grew up in Michigan, went to college in the UP and then moved to Texas. It's not so much that I can't drive in the snow any more, but I have a lot of trouble reading a snow covered road now. When I drove it every day I got used to picking out the subtle differences in color and texture and sheen that snow covered roads have. Now it just all looks white.

It's like me getting stuck in a sand dune. There aren't any berkeleying sand dunes around me. I don't know how to drive on a sand dune.

But if you got stuck in a sand dune, would it be national news spawning several multiple page threads?

I've seen video footage of the streets down there. I've lived in snowy climates my whole life, and learned to drive in the snowiest city in the US.

I wouldn't have had an easy time with what was down there, and i have winter tires.

I guess I had great confusion at the lack of functioning transit in Atlanta when it has snowed in years past. Then I visited some of the Atlanta metro area and my friend's cousin lived in a subdivision that had hills like I was at the corkscrew at Laguna. His driveway was at such a grade that I just laughed and laughed as I imagined trying to wash a car on that thing. So even normal snow would be interesting for him.

I assume the rest of Atlanta is planned the same way. As in ZERO planning for snow; which is a rational decision.

Still the problem I have isn't with driving ability or road maintenance but with the sad fact that if someone did shutdown the city under declaration of emergency and it didn't snow and ice up. That guy or group would be just plain screwed.

At the University of Michigan, a group of students sued the school for closing due to icing and just horrible weather. So now the School never EVER closes unless there is a building issue due to the weather. The teacher may not show up but that is on them and they can always just email you the lecture as an approved alternative to the in class.

Hope FEMA doesn't show up and start screwing everything up for you guys like New Orleans! Be Safe!

BTW I live in DC area now and based on what horrible driving I have seen here in summer dry conditions. I am soooooo happy that the Federal Government closes on bad weather days. Everyone that can, teleworks, and the streets are that much safer.

All I can say is that I have seen air under all 4 tires of a Dodge Stratus jumping onto an exit ramp, front row seat to a 360 of an old ford pickup watched a semi truck reverse on the interstate, seen 4 car fires in one day's commute, and got passed on an entrance ramp by an RS6 and a sport bike(I was going about 65 myself!). All in one summer and all in dry sunny weather.

You're missing the point. Datsun1500 can drive on ice, snow or whatever crap the moon is made of. Doesn't matter. And since Datsun1500 thinks we're all too stupid to recognize the difference between ice and snow, his skillz are not needed here.

I don't understand how we are supposed to get experience driving in snow and ice when we are told to stay home if we don't know how to drive in it.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. You are coming at this with common sense instead of making light of the situation.

Sure, the majority of people here don't have experience driving in the snow or very little but there are more variables to this than the "dumb southern people can't drive in snow". But with that said, there were still ice patches out this morning and people tailgating and driving like the normal summer shiny happy people and causing accidents.

I'd rather have to deal with 6 inches of snow than an inch of ice on summer tires.

The Laguna Seca reference definitely describes my neighborhood being how far north I am and being about a mile from Lake Lanier.

It's not the car, it's the driver. Not that I'm ripping on the drivers. You guys simply don't drive in that crap so you're not used to it. But I get sick of the southerners saying that they all have summer tires when every car with less than 500 hp is delivered with all seasons.

That's all propaganda. Hollywood special effects. Governor Deal commissioned those films to deflect criticism of his handling of the recent "unpleasantness."
