Most cars - including the Teslas - unlock the doors when the airbags fire. The problem with the S is that if there's no power, the exterior handles don't extend and you can't get the doors open from outside. That's not good. It's not really a smart design choice.
The 3 has door handles that are flush but don't require extension to make them accessible. They're actually very similar to the handles on the original GT40, which I find amusing.
Heh... I am reminded of a collision that happened just up the road from me and I stopped to block traffic with my car (no street lights on that stretch of I-480, with heavy traffic!)
Not sure exactly the mechanism, but she rolled her Versa/Yaris thing and it wound up on its roof. The bags did not go off, there was no reason for them to. The glass was all still intact, and the doors were locked. And the driver apparently passed out from the experience. So there's four of us standing there, trying to figure out how to open a door without breaking a window, because we didn't want to risk injuring her. After a couple minutes she woke up a bit disoriented and figured out how to open a door and unbuckle herself from an upside down car.
So, serious question here...
What is the real advantage to putting down the $100 deposit for a preorder? Do you get some benefit other than being an early adopter?

Wow...
...and that's about all I have to say...
..well... other than I'm still waiting for a EV van.

I'm hoping that means you are first in line when they finally build it. Realistically it gives them feedback on demand.
For the Model 3, it got you a little model car that now sells on eBay for about $250.

So, unscientific study...
For this thread...
Pre-reveal - barely 3 pages over weeks/months
Post-reveal - 5 pages in hours.
Like it or not, Tesla has a ton of interest and publicity from this reveal.
In reply to BradLTL :
I didn't even consider that this was not the case...wasn't sure if there were other perks like free access to Superchargers for some period of time or a special 220v sex toy (you know to use the outlets in the "vault" while camping so you can scare the wildlife... ;) ).

Yeah but the three pages were mostly full of how cool the new truck could be and the 5 post reveal pages are mostly laughing at Tesla.

Anyone good at Patent searches ?
it would be interesting to see when they applied for a design patent on this......
I'm wondering what the aero looks like. This seems a little...wing-ish.

Kind of like a wobblin' goblin.
So it turns out MotorTrend had some unrestrained access to the truck. Their takeaways of it's driving style are interesting- but even wilder is how it's built. It's folded.
"Ditch the heavy, traditional, body-on-frame, and rethink the structure as weight-efficient trussed bridge in its simplest load-spreading configuration: a triangle set on its hypotenuse. One side is the Cybertruck's wedgy cab, the other, its tapered, sail-sided bed, their meeting point at the truck's tall peak resulting in a huge cross-sectional area for maximum stiffness." -Motortend
Also, that long tonnaeu cover? A solar panel option. 20 to 30 miles of extra range possible.
I genuinely excited for this. I might actually pre-order one, I don't know.
I do have to say this new Tesla truck looks perfect as a swamp buggy
People will cross shop this with the X6M. That's your market. Ostentatious limited edition luxury SUVs.
It's certainly striking but it's not good looking. It's a goth truck for grownups who made fun of the goth kids.
It will look ridiculous in the Home Depot parking lot, or picking the kids up from school.
I hate it.

With more time thinking on it, I like it more and more.... except for the damn design. I really like everything about it except for the looks, and one functionality item: the height of the bedsides.

I'm clearly an outlier, but I love the design, pretty much unreservedly.

Anyone else think they broke the windows on purpose?
I mean, it would require really good acting on elon's part, but dang they got so much more publicity for screwing up than they ever would have with just an odd looking truck.
Pre-ordered one this afternoon. I guess I'll have to see how much the Ram I bought a month ago is worth a year from now.

I wondered that. I’d also like to see that throw through a “normal” window, to see if it’d go through or react the same.
I figured for $100 refundable how can you go wrong?
Tech makes me go woo, design not so much.
But it should be an interesting 18-24 months.
