Randy is one of my heros, I really love the guy. He was racing at Pitt race when we were autocrossing and come over, hung out, and co-drove with someone before heading back to the track. Where are the selfies you ask? I RAN TO SUBWAY TO GRAB LUNCH! F-ME! I was so crushed that I missed him.

He has had some back luck at Pikes Peak, but from what I know about him the setbacks will only push him to defeat the mountain, because his last off certainly didn't slow him down this time.

Depending on the pic/angle I'd guess I'm seeing potentially more like 2-2.5 inches of droop in the rear. That correlates to a ride frequency in the 2-2.2 Hz range on that end of the car. At those frequencies it's entirely reasonable for adjustable body shocks to have all the travel that the springs can make use of in droop. So my main question is: In your experience is, that ride frequency too stiff for this application?

I don't use suspension frequency as a tuning tool. But if your springs are going loose at droop, you can always consider longer springs. We use 12" springs in one Miata application. Looking at the pictures of the race coilovers on the Unplugged site, they're not using very long springs.

Using the closest thing we have to an airborne straight side view as well as the picture of the car at rest and assuming that's a 19" wheel (based on the available sizes sold by Unplugged), I measured off a couple of different points on the car (fender lip as well as the sharp crease on the fender) and came up with between 1.0 and 1.1" of droop.  The in-car also looks like a rear that unloaded pretty quickly, and it kinda looked like a dip which tends to rebound hard if you bottomed.

Apparently there are three Model 3s running the event. Two of them didn't survive today.

And people ask me why I haven't taken a run at Pikes Peak...

Maybe take another car besides your Tesla.

I always love hearing a PRO talk openly about an incident.  They always have interesting insight and retrospect.  It was eerily quiet at 112mph in a race car - so weird.

They were looking to beat 10 minutes, so this was a team and driver that weren't just noodling around for fun. I also wonder about the tuning - setting up suspension for the real world is a lot harder than for the track, and maybe the car got squirrely when it got into the bumpstops on a big, high-speed hit. If you look at the pictures of the car flying, there's very little droop. And the coilovers that Unplugged sell are two-piece, which inherently have less travel than a properly designed coilover do.

So my theory is: big bump, car runs out of travel on the rebound, all the weight comes off the rear wheels, whee.

If your goal is just to block the sun a bit, it seems to me that tint would be a lot easier than a ginormous chunk of CF and all the production and installation hassles that would go along with that :)

With the minimal amount of aero on that car, I doubt they were going to get into the 10 minute range.

Keith no one "wins" practice.  With that said I think it was a classic case of the stars misaligning; new car, bump was bigger than last time etc.

Of course nobody wins practice, but if you don't take the course at near race pace you're in for a surprise when you do.

Well, I have driven it in a Subaru-powered VW van...

Keith we're on the same page as far as being on it from the second you take off but I got the impression Randy was left feeling he should have heeded the signs that this section might be an issue.

They are rebuilding it.

They bough a new Tesla 3 Performance to use as a donor and are straightening the frame + swapping parts over from the new car.

They were going to replace it with the new Model 3 but that's not allowed, you've gotta run what you brung.

Man, the stuff we do for racing. Ripping apart a brand new $55k car just because. I'm pretty sure the MINI team did the same thing at the Targa Newfoundland in 2011, their racer broke so they cannibalized a car at a dealership. But not quite to this extent.
