looks like it's been sitting awhile, and the yellow tag on the key looks like something a dealer or auction house would use.

That is a $25-30k 911 or a $7500 lawn ornament.

$25k is still a fair price for a 911... but it's going to be a lot of work when there are $30k 997s that already run well out there.

To the non-mechanically inclined it is not worth fixing but to those of us tht look at it as a glorified Beetle and have played with P cars for years that has huge possibilities. I wonder how far down you could get that if you showed up with cash.

I agree - if you can haul that home for $5k you can get a junkyard motor - maybe even a 3.8, trans with all the trimmings and computer and still come in under $25k.

The 996/1 is much harder to plug in anything bigger than a 3.4. For a 3.8 you'd want a /2. Not saying impossible but you'd replace the wiring harness and a lot of other bits.

DIY 3.4 motor install. I know a place with 3.4 sitting on shelves with ims already retrofitted.

Before I posted the link I showed the listing to SWMBO. Who just laughed and laughed and told me, only half-jokingly, to go berkley myself. Even after that, if I could drive it away for $5k I'd take my chances.

Car prices out East are generally a bit lower than out here, but I'd think out here it would be a $6k-7k car even with a busted-ish motor. I've seen people ask over $10k for those.

My big concern would be what lead to that cracked head (which IIRC isn't an unknown issue on those, but not that common either). It might well be that the cheapest way to fix it is dropping in a used engine - honestly I wouldn't want to know how much much the head goes for used and how much other damage there is.

That said, the '99 has some engine ancillaries that are unique to it so it would require checking if you can drop in any 3.4 or if you'd actually need a '99 3.4. Either way it's probably uneconomic for buy&fix if you have to pay a shop to do a fair amount of the work (like I had to). Just pulling the engine and putting it back in takes forever (IIRC that's about 6h minimum each way) and it takes a long time to strip it down.

I just really like that color. You don't see it very often.

That car is like the really hot Married Girl that flirts with you at the bar. You know you should ignore it and walk away but there is that thing that keeps you coming back to look.

LS swap is probably about the same amount of money. You end up with way more power and a far more reliable motor tho
