It was my buddies fault but we are still friends. I don't have enough friends to lose on over a 20 year old miata
You need this car.
Newer and safer: a nice cherry Mazdaspeed Miata should come in around the right price and come with 10-year-new airbag tech. You can probably get an NC for that range too, although it's a different experience.
Either that was one hell of a 95 Miata or you had some dirt on the insurance adjuster, either way you should be able to use that money to get something cooler.
Personally I'd get something with a roof... but I'm biased as someone who doesn't fit in the Answer.
