I am really interested in building a car for the challenge, but right now I have too much on my plate to seriously consider putting time and money into the effort. maybe in the future. If I were going to do it, I would want to do something strange and/or difficult.
So, here is my idea. I would like to build something originally terrible, just to see what i could do to it. the plan is fairly simple. you guys come up with as many bad ideas for challenge cars as you can think of. Then I or anyone else willing to try will use this as a list when trying to buy a car for the challenge.
yugo with a vanagon engine?(not sure if possible) go for it.
turbo a geo metro with the 3cyl? sure.

"Bad" idea?
Those sound like profoundly good ideas to me.
A turbo Geo metro is in no way a bad idea.
If the last post in this thread doesn't include the sentence "So where can I find an afterburning turbofan and a go-kart?" I will be officially disappointed.

I've thought that a straight axle front and live axle rear would look great sticking several feet in front and behind a smart car.

And 10 minutes later I'm texting a guy about buying his smart car shell off CL.

In reply to The Artist Formerly Known as Giant Purple Snorklewacker :
What engine is that? It looks fun ...and expensive.
Toyota Celica AWD engine and drivetrain in a classic Mini.
In reply to Apple Cougar Mellonseed :
if you could do that on a challenge budget then i'd make one for a DD

Maybe give it an extra long front and put the engine in front of the body and behind the front wheels? Good for balance and it'll look badass...
Edit: Project name: Smart Rod.
Turning an old Jaguar into a FWD honda powered automobile is one of my favorite bad ideas. Think of the reliability and MPG you would be adding to the Jaguar.

Bonus points for still mounting the bumper/grill/headlights in front of the engine.
There must be a million odd combinations that are possible but there is one thing that has eluded The Challenge for all of its years:
Maserati BiTurbo

It'd be the only smart rod in my possession.
Turbo a Legends racer. Add required exterior lighting for street use. Then try to get it tagged and insured.
In reply to John Welsh :
Would I get bonus points for that?
There are few things that have "never been done" in The Challenge and Maserati is certainly one of them. I would think you would get "Challenge Legend" status.

Two things:
Maserati Biturbo and Lotus
Sadly, a Lotus Europa has been passed around between at least 5 different Challengers and still never made it.
A Cortina made it in 2004, but I am pretty sure it was technically a Ford Cortina, not a Lotus Cortina.
Sorta like picking your porn star name.
1. Smallest car you've ever owned.
2, Largest or most powerful street legal drive train you've ever driven.
3. Biggest wheels/ tires you've had on a vehicle
4. Color/paint scheme of car you first learned to drive
COMBINE FOR CHALLENGE BUILD
MINE? A Fiat 850, with 455 Buick wildcat drive train on 35" gumbo mudders painted teal and white like a 50s era Metropolitan
there is a Biturbo on winston-salem CL right now.
"motor doesn't spin from sitting." that does not sound good.
Do it like a crazy Kiwi, Some bad language for those at work btw.
