so this part has been on Craigslist for many years. Three that I can remember. I know this because it started showing up in my “celica” search results way back when I bought the car. I have owned many Toyotas. I’ve never seen this part. It started out at 30$, then 25$, and has now dwindled to 5$. I’m tempted to buy it JUST so it won’t show up in my search results anymore! Can anyone guess what this is supposed to do?

What is- an ignition breaker point, Alex!
Yep, it is a set of points. Way back when, replacing the points, rotor, maybe the cap along with spark plugs was part of a tune up.
and don't forget the condenser!

Yikes. Shows how young I am! The last car I had with points was my s30, and I immediately swapped to electronic ignition.

I was going to add that they are currently used to reveal the age of the forum members!

I bought my 70 Firebird for $190.00 listed as a non running 42,000 mile car for parts that had been sitting a looooong time. $5.00 for a new condenser and it lived again. Only bad condenser I ever ran into. Ya, you're probably right about revealing forum members ages.
My grandpa told me a story about points.
(nah, who am I kidding? Im 47. I’ve owned lotsa points)

So you're saying the young are pointless!
Ok, geriatrics... I think everyone is overstimulated here. Time to take your pills
Point out to the seller that there is a price tag on it for $3.39, and that's all you'll pay for it .

But these are VINTAGE parts!
In reply to NOT A TA :
I've actually had 2 go bad on me.
Boat with twin 350 Chevys, did a complete tune up on both motors, Mercury Marine parts, and a couple months later, one engine would start and die as soon as I let off the key.
Started swapping ignition components between the motors and the condenser was the culprit. Replaced it with the original one.
The following spring, the other new condenser went bad. Didn't take nearly as long to diagnose as the 1st time! popped in the 2nd original one to get me back to the marina. Put Pertronix Electronic ignition in it after that.
