The Indy 500 - 2021

I am watching. Been some interesting twists with a crash in the pits causing cars to have to make emergency stops and then run out of fuel in the pit lane.  Proof that luck is a big part of this race. 

At work with no way to watch. :-(

This is the first Indy race I've watched since they added the halo around the cockpit. At this point, why even bother with open cockpit, other than making it easier to extract the driver after a crash?

A hole in the top of the car still weighs less than a door.  Also, tradition I guess.

I really don't care one way or the other.  It just gives people something to complain about instead of enjoying some great racing. 

Ok almost halfway.   Sato has been very quiet so far. He knows how to win and can get real aggressive. I am thinking he will be there at the end.  Also Castroneves looks like he has a car that can get it done. I would love to see him get #4.  

My dad loved the Indy 500.  He was a fireman in the pits - '76-'82.  

Since he has passed I miss talking to him about the race the past three years.

Just WOW. I think we can say that the halo probably saved Conner from a really bad day. 

Terrible luck for some big drivers today.

Dixon and Rossi get caught out by a yellow that closes the pits- both run out of fuel, and DI engines are notoriously hard to start w/o fuel.

And now Rahal had a great car but a wheel didn't get put on.

Dixon does manage to get back on the lead lap at least.

One of my best friends. The one that gave me the opertunity to go racing use to always watch the race together.  We would set up three card tables and have cards with the driver, team, car number set up in the grid order. We would then update it as the race went on.  My friend would keep the decks. After his passing about a year later his son called me and told me he found all the decks with a note to give them to me. ( my friend new the end was coming and had time to plan things). Although my friend has been gone for 20 years the 500 is a special race because of the great memories I have from all those races we watched. I realize it sounds a bit lame but this was before the days of fax machines and cell phones and the internet. It was what we did back then.

Absolutely. It looked like Daly didn't even have time to flinch.

Odd with those repeated brake issues on pit lane.

What a drive for Helio!!

It really reminds me of when Unser won his 4th- he seemed like on the decline of his career, but took a great win after Andretti did an Andretti.

Well, Helio just joined a pretty elite club.

Cagey veteran used the draft and closed the door in turn four to seal the deal

So when do we see the first group photo of Foyt, Unser, Mears and Castroneves ?

What a great race. My god father died a year ago last April. He was a huge Indy fan and went to this race regularly. He was one of my great car (and life) influencers. Somehow watching this race helped me feel more connected to him. I can't wait for next years.
