The reason for me wanting the process with the car expedited is I have found a replacement for it that is an exact copy of it for very reasonable money (for what it is). The copy has 50K less miles than mine so I dont expect the payout to match the purchase price of the copy. I am expecting to kick in some. But I don't want to loose the opportunity as I have been looking all over the place and I have not been able to find anything close untill this car popped up. This is an exact copy down to the colors and the option level. I really was hoping that it would be a total outright so I would have a check in the mail and I could then go and secure the replacement.
I almost just purchased it last night but then I realized I could end up being the proud owner of two of these cars. That may not sit well with my wife.. . . . or me.. . . Well maybe she would like it as we would then have a his and hers set. LOL
You could always buy the other one and then sell this one if it ends up being repaired, provided it'll sell for reasonable $$$.
These cars are hard to sell as it is as they are not cheep enough for the average POS disposable car but are not so expensive that they command some sort of respect. (over 4K but less than 10K) And lets face it they are not in high demand so people out looking will generally be choosy unless you want a black interior. Those seem to be much harder to find than the other light colored interiors. And with an accident on record it will make it that much harder to sell. (Another reason I really don't want it around any more)

If they fix it I will be insisting that I see it on the alignment rack I will probably now put it on my rack today or tomorrow to see what it baselines at. I probably will not sign off on it until I actually put it back on my Hunter Machine to verify that it is fixed.
I have another question. Can I demand that the other insurance company come out and certify that the repairs are complete and that they are 100% per the repair order? that way if down the road I find something I can come back at them? Or will they just send a no body out that will rubber stamp it as they just want me out of there hair.
Also I have been getting a fuel smell in the cabin since the accident if I fill it up more than 1/2 way and there is no mention of it in the estimate (Yet the adjuster smelled it adn commented about it to me). What happens if I get the car back and when I fill it up again I get the fuel smell. Part of me wants to fill it up before I take it to the shop but if they are going to total it I am out the $50 for the fill up.
Again how does this all work? I know I may sound like I am nicking and diming things here and any one item alone is not that big a deal but $50 here $75 there and it starts to add up to real money at some point.
All of this is the responsibility of the body shop you chose. The insurance company won't certify the repairs, because they're not the ones doing the actual work...they're just writing the check. The shop is responsible to find the damage, identify it to the insurance company and do the repairs properly. So make sure you have a good shop. It's not unheard of for a shady shop to write a very thorough (or overinflated estimate), then slap the car back together and keep the extra money. Don't get me wrong, that's a rarity, but I've seen it enough.
I'd really suggest getting the car into the shop ASAP. They really need to do a tear down to expose hidden damage. Then you'll know for sure if it's totaled or not. Insurance company isn't doing to do much else right now until it's at the shop.
With the recent storms here all the shops are booked solid. The shop of choice can not take the car untill the 7th. I have a rental scheduled for then as well.
The other two shops I do business with are booked untill the end of march.
I've had a few different shops tell me to get into a rental ASAP. The sooner you "start the meter running" for cost incurred by the Ins. Co. the quicker they feel compelled to send out an adjuster and revise their estimate and pay out extra to the shop if need be. The majority of the time this has worked for me.
Only once have I had them drag their feet and it was really foolish on their part. My car essentially sat there for an extra week or 10 days waiting for an adjuster that wasn't replying to the body shop after multiple attempts to contact them. By the time it was all said and done they probably paid out more on the rental car then they did for the disputed increase for the repairs.
In your case too you are really hoping that they tear it down, look at it, and say that it's totaled so the sooner you can get it in the better.

Quick question for you.
I have not been using the car much since tge accident. I have only used it to get to the office and back. A total of about ten miles round trip on a local state road that averages about 35mph. Monday and Tuesday I had to use tge car for a couple much longer trips. During these the car repeatedly would kick in to the protection mode that limits speed to about 15 mph and I have no throttle response. It did the 3x on Monday and 4x yesterday. Needless to say it I not a safe condition to loose tge ability to accelerate at random moments. Again this has never happened before. A little homework on my part said it is something wrong in the CANbus system putting the trans and motor in to safe mode when a major fault is detected in the system. to get I going again I have to park it and shut everything down including the lights wait thirty seconds and re start it. Sometimes it takes two or three tries. I have sent an email to the insurance basically mimicking this post asking what to do requesting a rental ASAP.
Am I just going to have to suck it up and deal with tho on my own or do they have to fix this as well.
Ohya the car did toss a fault code as the light is now on so at least there is a starting point for fixing it.
If that issue showed up as part of the accident (might be easy to determine depending on what the fault code is) then they should take care of fixing it (or count it towards the $$$ amount that ends up totaling the car).
Are you going through your insurance or theirs when requesting the rental? I think you need to contact your insurance ASAP, tell them the car isn't safe and get a rental. They will deal with getting reimbursed from the other insurance company. Don't fix anything on the car, and document ever issue you find.
I would definitely push for a rental car. Sounds like yours isn't safe to drive...and technically with the cracked tail light, it's not legal. They will then push for you to get it in the shop. I know they're busy, but I'd see if the shop can at least take an hour to rip the bumper off and expose the rest of the damage because once that's done you can start moving towards closure on this.
I am going through there's. My insurance is notified. With the car only being worth about 5K and me only having about 2K in to it (why I was thinking of taking to the challenge this year in the aristocrat class) I don't have FTC on the car only max medical and liability since in 2 years the cost for FTC would greatly exceed what I have in to the car and in 3-4 years I would have enough to purchas another on at full used retail.
I got a reponce from the insurance company and basicly they said get a rental.
Insuarnce Co. said:
Good Morning Mr. Smith
If you’re in need of a rental sooner, I would be glad to set that up for you. Just let me know when you will need the rental and where you will be renting it from so I set that up at the correct rental location. Also, any concerns you have with the car, tell the body shop so when we send in the appraiser again, body shop can let the appraiser know everything that is happening to the car due to the accident. I hope this helps, If you have any further questions, please contact me. Thank you
So in short that is the answer and it sounds like they will just add it to the claim. I just have to make sure that the body shop is aware of it when the adjuster re visits the car.
I have a call in to them about getting the rental either late today or tomorrow AM.
I have to say that although this is a PITA the person I am dealing with at AMIC has been nice. I think she realizes that I am annoyed about this whole thing as it has interfered with my life but then again so do lots of other things and you just have to deal with it. At the en of the day I have to have some involvement in the process no matter what especially if I want to make sure I am made whole. If you don't everyone will do the minimum required. It is just how the system works.
I have actually wondered if there could be a business that you could start that would be as a accident consultant.
And I called the shop and it is going in tomorow morning and a rental will be waiting for me.
And I tried to drive it this AM and no dice it is getting worse very quickly. Tripped in to "safe mode" 3x in under 2 miles of driving. So a flat bed is the next option.

it gets totalled, buy back, insert transmission, profit?
I actually like that blue. Transmission change is a bit of a PITA in these actually. That is about what I paid for mine and it was thought to need a transmission. Turned out to be the transfer case. A much easier fix but they cost about 2x what a used trans costs.

I think that is the same blue I had on mine. There are a lot of these X Types on Craigslist in need of transmissions.
If it is AWD and the car's driveline is locked up it is the transfer case. the Jaguar solution is to replace the trans and the transfer case along with the entire cooling system for the trans. At the dealer this is a 10-14K bill. The other PITA is that if you replace the transmission you have to re program the ECU to work with that trans and that has to use a bidirectional programmer. These are expensive. My local trans shop wanted $100 to do it for me but I was told that I really should flatbed the car to the trans shop and not drive it at all until the ECU and the trans are taught to play nice with each other. I suspect that many of these get transmission changes by backyard mechanics but the ECU part is not addressed and the replacement trans blows up in very short order. By the way this is the same for Volvo's of the same vintage.

Insurance Company's are a PITA. They say "We will give you a rental at not cost" What they don't tell you is that they don't pay for the FTC and GL on it. You are supposed to use your insurance (so said the rental car people and the insurance co that is paying for the rental). WTF The insurance costs are not cheep. Like almost $50/day.
I did more home work on this and found that say you have a $6K car (like my Jag) and you have full coverage on it. If you get a rental and say it is a brand new car (say $30K). Your insurance will cover you BUT only up to the value of your car not the full value of the rental that you are driving. So if you total a 30K rental car and you don't have the rental car insurance and your car is only a 6K Jag you are $24K out of pocket.
I don't have FTC on my car so in this case with this rental I don't have any insurance other then general liability and my medical up to my limits. So in short I am going to have to either get the insurance co to pony up for the insurance coverage on the rental or I will turn in the rental on Monday as I am not going to pay that kind of $$$$ for insurance. I only pay about $150 a month ($5.00 a day) for full coverage on one of my other cars and for the Max GL and Medical on the jag. Where do they get off charging almost $50 a day for the rental.
I am not happy at the moment. This is actually borderline deceptive on there part. So I am in the wonderful position that even though I have a "free rental" I have to pay just shy of $50 a day to have it. If I don't pay the insurance on it I could be out the entire cost of he rental if something was to happen. I know statistically speaking every day you have the same chance of getting in to an accident but I have gone almost 30 years with out an at fault accident and statistically I have the same chance tomorrow as I did 30 years ago but A little voice is telling me get the insurance.
A lot in that post is a bit confusing to me. Did you call your insurance agent or company and ask about coverage for your rental transferring? I have never heard of an insurance policy that says when you get a replacement while your car is down, they only pay up to the actual cash value of the car that's down. Unless there is some kind of odd endorsement or clause in your insurance policy, as long as the comp/collision coverage carry over, it'll pay for the full value of the rental (minus your deductible, just like on your Jag). Some insurance carriers...usually the high risk ones...won't transfer comp/collision to a rental, but most do.
Even if it doesn't, pretty much all insurance policies carry liability coverage over to the rental. Again, check directly with your carrier.
Sounds like Enterprise did one heck of an upsell job. Even if you wanted to purchase their comp/coll coverage (which isn't necessary if your policy transfers), it's typically around $18/day, not $50.
The insurance carrier typically doesn't owe to pay additional insurance costs charged by Enterprise. They pay the cost of the car and applicable taxes. Insurance carriers can make concessions and pay it if they want, but it's pretty rare that they do...especially if you have full coverage on your own car (I'm still baffled by the $6k vs $30k thing...doesn't make sense).
I did call my agent and they told me that your insurances will carry over but only for the value of the car the policy is written for. They are insuring my $6000 JAG not a virtually new $30000 rental car. So they will only pay out on the rental up to the value of the car that the policy is written for. In this case my $6000 Jag. Leaving me responsible for the difference between the value of my car and the rental. Make sense?
General liability is $34 a day. FTC is another $18 per day.

Sadly, most agents have little idea of what coverages actually are or how claims actually work. I agree with Klayfish as another insider as to how these things usually work
