One that smacks of perseverance, Pressure, difficulty, and of course, winning. I need that story. Preferably in a book form.
I have an inmate I'm helping see light at the end of the tunnel. he's got a year to go, and isn't currently doing well, but has been the last six years! I plan on writing a short, fictional story about a man that nearly gives up at the end of a difficult automobile race to hopefully inspire this young man that has a passion for cars. At the end, I want to direct him to the purpose of the book I send him.
Hit me with your best, true stories. Doesn't have to be from a book, I can always research and paraphrase it in some printed papers I mail.
I think we all have stories of perseverance but some of the best racing stories of perserverence can be found in Motorsports magazines "lunch with" series.
As a young man I didn't exactly have a lot of direction. I also made some highly questionable decisions which could have landed me in jail. Fortunately I figured out that I was going to need to get my act together if I wanted to play with motorcycles & cars. It took me six years to get from a minimum wage job to the point where I could afford a race bike. I took up car racing about 4-5 years after that. Up until about 15 years ago I was still on a very tight budget. When you're in your twenties months seem like years.

It's not a single race and he's had some more setbacks, but I find Alex Zanardi's story very inspiring.
There's a book Against Gravity. The author was having health problems in the mid 80s and somehow decided the best way to overcome them was to enter the Paris-Dakar rally with his girlfriend. It was an amazing adventure.
World's Fastest Indian. How do you take a 1920 Indian Scout and persue 200mph?
