So our son has asked for a random orbital polisher; anyone have any recommendations?

Mikita  I tried a lot but it does the fastest work with the least vibration ( your hands will appreciate it)  it's also the one I see most wood workers use.
There are cheaper ones there are more expensive ones. It's just they are very good.

I've sold DeWalt and Milwaukee offerings to customers with no issues or complaints afaik.

Is used a porter cable and I have a cheap harbor freight one. When I was detailing for money I used a porter cable, now that I rarely use it I have a cheap that works fine, but I'd probably upgrade it If I was going to be doing it all the time.

I guess what I'm saying is what's the use case.

With most tools I say I never really needed them until I had them and then I used them all the time, like a pressure washer. That wasn't really the case with my DA though, now that I'm not doing a bunch of cars I have almost no use for it

I've bought a lot of DeWalt and Milwaukee tools myself. Both brands make some fine tools. I really wanted to try to stay all one brand but found some tools  are best made by one company while another makes better versions of•••••
For example the pros call Porter cable nailers. Nail starters. ( because no matter how they are adjusted and how much air pressure reaches the tool some nails aren't all the way in. The carpenter has to go back and hit them with his hammer..  But Porter Cable makes the best routers. Bostich makes the best nailers.
Dewalt makes really fine saws. But Milwaukee makes the best drills and very fine impact wrenches.
Mikita makes the smoothest most rugged Random orbital sander.

I had a Porter Cable random orbital sander that I changed out pads for adhesive sanding discs and also foam pads for compounding and waxing. I used it on several large fiberglass sailboats for a number of years sanding off bottom paint and polishing hull. It held up to a lot of very hard use and abuse. If I were to be shopping for another that is what I would buy.

The harbor freight porter cable knockoff is great and i have abused it very badly and it keeps going.  Plus they make a sanding pad attachment
