And while they are always higher powered year for year, comparing price for price you find you are in a significantly older model.

As I said earlier, remove the lower center stack and you will feel like you have much more room in the interior. You lose only the cd/cassette holder.

I was at an event yesterday and looked over a second generation car. It is a lot better looking and more spacious. Maybe that extra 300 pounds is worth it. The interior is a lot nicer too.

OK $ for $ would you choose a base 987 or a late 986S? Yes the 987 is much nicer inside, but is it worth skipping the extra power, much more torque and the six speed?

Just got a quote to paint the house. What a coincidence, the price was about the same as that Boxster I have been looking for. Damn, I hate reality.

Would if be much cheaper to Plasti-dip the house?

Time to put Margie out to work. The extra money would be handy.

Hell I see that as good news. 'See honey I can paint the house myself and save enough money to buy a Boxster'

I saw this (at a stop light so safe to take pic and text) on my way to work and sent it to my wife with the message "I'm caught in a time warp, I'm next to myself from 14 months int he future'

To which she replide 'money dependent' so later I was next to this (another stop light, but only for pic, text sent once at work) with the message 'or this then'

Mid engine awesomeness is harder to appreciate when your line of sight is two inches below the windshield frame and your knees are scraping the back side of the steering wheel. I know things could be modified to fit me better in the interior. If I want to do interior redesign and play amateur ergonomist, its cheaper and easier to do in many other vehicles. If I am going to spend the money for the costs of Porsche ownership, I would really like to have something that fits me out of the box.

Tim - Here is a local (to you) option.

Used 2001 Silver Porsche Boxster S Convertible. Bought from Carmax, barely used due to relocation. Garage Kept! Like new!

That's all the money for an early car. I might wait, sell one of old cars or make payments and just go with a second gen S. That looks like a hell of a car for mid twenties.

Tim Suddard

And I am thinking this would be a car I would keep forever.

If I was just going to write a few stories and then sell it, I might go for an early non S.

Tom is actually busier than I am. He goes to school full time and is trying to work nearly full time. He is also leaving in a few weeks for the summer to intern at Hagerty in Michigan. And I would rather pay someone to paint and spend my time building cars. I am too old to paint a two story house. Screw that!

Seriously I think there's an updated article in this just for the purchase.
Candidate 1. Perfect 03 up 986S in the $15K region
Candidate 2. Early 987 in the $20k region
Candidate 3. NC Miata with Cosworth/Glying Miata Supercharger and handling pack, buildable for $15-20K

A big part of me wants the late 986S to win

Tim, Tim, Tim. I thought this was pretty obvious. Your job is to live the life that we are (usually) unable to. Your professional responsibility is to buy cars like a cherry S model so that we can wish that we were you. If it appears that you can no longer maintain a steady progression of lustworthy vehicles, the mystique will have worn off, and we'll have to move on. The fate of GRM is in your hands.

No pressure though.

Pretty much agree, this is why I have vinyl siding and a powerwasher.

Well you do have another child.... and also don't you have interns? What's the point of having power like yours and not abusing it?

Seriously though, I understand where you're coming from as I've got a landscaping project that I SHOULD be doing, but instead I'm replacing the front suspension on our BMW and will pay someone to do the landscaping as I'd rather work on the BMW (for now).

This is relevant to my interest. With all this talk the only thing I think is that I need a car that will be a decent/fun daily driver for a few years. Then, maybe, gut, rollcage, and FP or DP. So, in that, its these cars

Boxster

Miata

MR-S

S2000

Each looks to make into a nice prepared car. Which is the only reason I do not have the likes of a Z3 or others. That also means, I would look at the early cars in the boxster for a 2.5.

I need to dig more into the IMS and see, but I guess in reality a Miata or MR-S is more the way to go.

My instructor at my first track day took me out in his brand new first year Boxster S. My impression of them has always been favorable since.

Get a nice first gen S, then paint the house with the difference in price between that and a 987s. It's the best kind of responsibility.
