It's no secret, wifey wants a Thing in the worst way.  It has been a terrible start to the year with the loss of our dog and deaths in the family.  And then this month she has just had one of those months at work that literally leaves her in tears at the end of the day. Top it off that she has put up with being a "car widow" ever since this Wartburg showed up and I owe her big.

So she's out of town again on another terrible business trip, but when she gets home I think I just might be able to put a smile on her face.

Put a deposit on it this morning, hopefully I'll have the deal wrapped up and the car in the garage by the time she returns friday.

Not a perfect car but a nice driver with just enough tinkering needed to keep me happy.  Some older bodywork that's holding up ok but shows and the paint is shiny but poorly done.  Its ok, she doesnt like red much anyway so we'll repaint it over the winter.  Solid floors and good running motor.  3 tops, hard top, soft top and parade top.

Yep, its on the list. I have a ghia disk brake beam here I'll probably swap in then swap the ford pattern adapters for a set of porsche pattern adapters for the Fuchs I have from the Wartburg project that didnt get used since we bumped that up to 17s

Probably none of that happening this season, I'll just let her enjoy it and think about it over the winter.

I saw one of those lifted (not much, 2-3") on knobby tires (29" - 31" tops) and it looked really cool. Sort of like Hummer Jr.

Wouldn't that be Hummer Senior?

Are those Mustang wheels?

Yeah, SN95 wheels with the ponies ground off the caps. Nice goodyear F1 tires on em. I think the Fuchs will look better though.

Sorry for the jack here- do you pronounce Fuchs like "berkleyers", "Fooks","fooCHs" or what?

Nice score!!!!

Ever since I got the ACVW bug a few years ago, I've always wanted one of these done up semi-kubelwagen/semi-hoodride style. Chop the roof, slam it a little, painted with some flat desert tan, roll a 2110 motor........

too much cars, too little time, too little funds.......

The reason she's been on me about it is right before we were married I did up his and hers things for us. Hers was stock but mine was to be much like you described, chop top with a carson top, slamed, and a hot motor. They were sacrificed for wedding expenses and I got her a Manx buggy after we were married which we just sold last year but she's always wanted another Thing. Anything that gets her interested in cars as a hobby is ok with me.

Every weekend from now till June is going to be needed to finish off the Wartburg, including our anniversary weekend....its not brownie points, its atonement

Actually she will, the Manx was her Jimmy Buffet tailgate vehicle so this one will now take its place, she needs the tunes to tailgate properly ;)

Awesome! I knew you'd find one for her sooner or later. We won't talk about Subie swaps right now, but if she came home from another trip and it had MORE POWER, she wouldn't complain, would she? .

Good job on your end.

Doing things for love? the wife worked today and I cleaned three bathrooms, front hallway, the basement stairs, cleaned the kitchen and then made her hamburgers on the grill as she took a nap.

I was going to work in the garage but cleaned instead.

Married 23 years too.

dang, she just called me from Chicago where things are stressing her out and she is really on edge, I sooo wanted to tell her but I honestly think it would have just put her more on edge for the week wanting to get home and see it.

I travel and HATE weekend travel too.

Have her stop at the Hallmark store in Lockport and my wife will take her out to lunch.

Definitely not ruling out an eventual subie swap, I'll have the experience from the 'burg and we were dontated a 2nd motor so if we dont blow up the first one I'll have an engine to work with. But I'll let her decide what does and doesnt happen with this one. And no, she wouldnt complain, she's a powerhound. When we were dating she drove a hyundai accent and I had an LT1 corvette. The first time she drove it she scared the crap outta me, but it woke the leadfoot in her.

Good man, she has been pretty good about my excessive garage time for this project but actually the travelling right now is slowing me down. I need to spend more time keeping up with all the things she does and keeping the dogs company so as much. So as much as I though her travel would free up my time for getting this car done I've learned that to keep up with her stuff is ALOT of work.

I dont know if she'll have any time to get away but I'll let her know. When she's onsite at these things she's basically coordinating everything from morning to night, thus the stress (she's a corporate meeting and event planner). She's moved into an area of the business where she normally just does the contract management and pre event planning and doesnt go on site, but this client is a major a-hole and she needs to be there to keep his prima donna butt satisfied.

You'd be the first person Ive met in 25 some odd years of VW/Porsche addiction that pronounced it that way but if it works for you cool :)

That's awesome! But, ya know, you're raising the bar here. I just hope my girlfriend doesn't scan on by this thread (she reads grm but isn't registered...yet) and start bugging me for a 'surprize' miata... or maybe that would be a good thing...

If you're trying to pronounce it anything close to the original German, that... doesn't work at all.

What Jay said - the correct German pronounciation is very similar to an English word the swear filter will pick up so 'Fooks' (but with a short 'oo' sound, not the longer one implied by the 'oo') is pretty close-ish. Think 'fox' but with the appropriate shift in pronounciation.

Oh and JThw8 - sweet present for the wife I would say!

Kind of like a bikini top for a jeep. Just a covering to keep the sun off you basically.
