Despite owning a decent soldering kit, I have zero electrical skill.

After adding a topper to my 2001 Silverado, it failed our state inspection due to not having a third brake light. I bought a generic LED bar off Amazon and tried to fumble my way, attempting to tap into the wiring for trailer brakes near the tow hitch. No dice. Can someone point me in the right direction?

Just curious: what state? I know in NY, the law states that all lights that the vehicle came originally equipped with have to work. People botch that law all the time, but technically, as long as the 3rd brake light on the cab still functions its legal. Because the bed cap light is not original to the truck, it does not have to work.

Texas passed a law in 2017 or 2018 saying that if you had a bed cap, it has to have a functioning third brake light. I'm tempted to tap into the OE third brake light, but that requires removing the topper completely, at which point I can just get it inspected sans topper and pass.

Probably be easier just to tap into the brake lights themselves

Assuming you have trailer wiring just get a 4 pin pigtail and wire it into that.

Also 2001 isnt old. Haha
