(alt. title "300 HP rear engine AWD mg midget that exists in my mind)

Hello all,

I was taking a break from doing a records check on the helicopter at work today. I was standing out by where we park our cars daydreaming about whats under the hoods and what else it could be used for. This has become a bit of an obsession lately. In fact ever since I saw the MG Midget 2016 challenge car from this forum being auto crossed on YouTube, I have been doomed to starting something this myself. I really shouldn't. If I had more self control, I'd just buy a decent airplane or helicopter project and have it done a lot faster, and be able to flip it and move onto another. But, I have become obsessed with things that roll on 4 wheels lately. So, to put my day dreams into type, here is a short list of whats been running through my head.

1) Banks Europa, or the shell of some beat up Europa bolted with Dzus fasteners to a tube chassis that I made. 4 cylinder turbo charged engine would be my first choice.

2) Some small open top British sports car from the '60's or '70's. Basically I want to copy what the guy who's name I can't remember did already.

3) See #2 above, but use something really stupid to power it like a BMW 325IX drive train (saw a rolled one yesterday)

4) Same as #1, but Lancia Scorpion, Fiat X19, or some other small Italian rust bucket.

5) Build another rally inspired street track Alfa Romeo Alfa Romeo Alfetta GT (because that's what my wife would want and we miss the one we had)

6) 2005-2006 Mini Cooper R53, gutted, caged ect. (too easy, but I love my 2011 Cooper S daily driver)

I bought a 100' x 50 ' hangar/shop last year. It's taking a lot of self control not filling it with crap from craiglist that might make an awesome autocross frankenstien project. I value neatness and open space too much to become a hoarder.

Oh, I have an even better idea for you and it fits your #2. An Austin Healy 3000 or an MGB-GT with a 1JZ motor-imagine the power and sound! 1JZ's are cheap and plentiful, and make big power.

This is a fantastic idea. Now you have me thinking of that Type 3 that is in the forums for 1700....

A Squareback would be awesome with a Boxster underneath, and early Boxsters are getting cheap

Ooh, where's the link to the cheap fastback type 3 that's got good outer panels but has been sitting in grass for a few years?

Yes, Awesomeness indeed. And like someone else said, Boxters are getting cheap. But, if I were to do a VW bug based project, I would have to do a Baja bug. Boxter Baja Bug? Nah, I already have a Jeep JK unlimited on pre-runner suspension. It would be redundant.

I keep going back to wanting a Europa body to do something with. Back in the 90's I passed several running Europa's up, I was afraid of them. I was also very into Alfa's, and Ducati's, and Moto Guzzi's, and was in my 20's. I even passed on a free Elan that had had an engine fire, but the owner was sort of internet stalking my wife. Now I bet that burned out Elan would sell for 10K.

I really should just forget this and stick with the 10 projects I already have.

Current projects:

1971 Moto Guzzi 750 Ambassador. Had it since 1989, coolest bike my 19 year old self could find. We been everywhere together and it is currently in boxes awaiting it's 2nd restoration. I even have several boxes of new parts and had the crank polished, turned, balanced.

1981 Moto Guzzi V50 Monza. Wifes. Ran okay when pickled and fork lifted onto a shelf above her office when we owned the Ducati dealership. It needs some love. It looks beautiful even though she (my wife) put 50K miles on it.

6 to 8 1960's and 1970's Ducati Singles depending on how you count piles of parts.

2008 Jeep JK Rubicon Unlimited, I keep breaking it and it needs more motor and a roll cage.

I also need to insulate my shop, build an engine clean room, make a better area for metal fab, and still have room to squeeze 3 airplanes in.

First world problems are nice to have.

Yes, that Midget. I dream at night about nocones car. I am not a rotary engine fan, mostly because I have never touched or driven one. But, I see myself building the equivalent with a 4 cylinder turbo, and preferably placed behind the seats, and in something Italian.

I wonder how well a Gen III Ecotec engine from a Cadillac/Camaro/Buick would fit? And what kind of manual tranaxles could I get? Or, is there a DSG type trans axle? I'll need to Google that.

Seen this theorized so many times but none of them panned out. Someone was working on a kit I think?
