Yeah, we need some sort of better abbreviation. Every time either one comes up, about a third of the response is "oops, thought you were talking about a [Jeep|Jag]"...

You could try a 4cyl wrangler with stock tires for the street. Should do low 20s mpg if you drive it slow.

Nope. I had one. You will drive it slow, but you won't get low 20's. Or 20...

Heh..makes me wish I had my FSJ back. I have to admit, though: someone would have to teach me rock crawling. I grew up on the coast, and all my off-road experience is beach driving, not mountain climbing. Only technique I recognized was rocking the steering through the bog, we used to do the same thing in deep sand.
I should say it makes me want a cheap 4x4 that wouldn't kill me on gas (liberty diesel?) but not exactly cheap

I will echo woody. My 4 cylinder yj wouldn't get 20mpg if you pushed off a cliff.
A mildly lifted WJ will manage 21mpg highway with the 4.0 and Selec-Trac. Not sure how commute friendly that mileage is though. It certainly is a lot nicer to drive around than an XJ if a bit bigger.

yup, lot thinner gauge than 'real' frame rails, prolly 4 - 4.5" boxed square under the cabin, still pretty stout.... less any rust. From the guy who cut one up w/ a sawzall.

Also understand any vehicle with full time lockers will have some interesting handling traits on the street. That thing wouldn't do what it did without lockers. I've wheeled plenty of one wheel or slectable two wheel drive jeeps. They do well. But not that well. The hill climb shown was the proper test of the lockers.
Still an awesome rig though. And I can't believe the price of those lockers. $300 or so. Cheap.
There's ALWAYS air lockers.
I need to track down my old XJ Cherokee. I've heard from the guy that bought it from me that it's one of the fastest Jeeps at the local mud bog, so I have to see it in person. I can't see how it stacks up that well to the other rigs that run out there.
