I've decided I want to add a small "stick on" spoiler to the rear lip of the trunk on my Yaris.  I'm not looking to drill any holes and don't like some of the "larger options" that bolt down anyway.  There will be no F & F style black wings on the Yaris.  I've found some smallish stick on spoilers on the bay of e for a manageable amount that supposedly come pre-painted to color match the car.  Assuming it shows up in a reasonable state of color-match, I'm wondering if I can achieve what seem like mutually exclusive goals of having it be removable if I hate it while having it stay attached if I like it.  The manufacturer's "how to" videos suggest outlining it in 3M tape and running a bead of silicon down the middle.  Here's my thoughts: I've had decent luck with the 3M tape in the past with emblems and the like and have even been able to remove and reposition without damaging the paint (although only after relatively short periods of time).  I can see where the silicon might help with adhesion, but I'm assuming it would stain the paint.  Thoughts?  I promise I won't misuse the imparted knowledge to add stick on chrome to the wheel arches.  (In fact, I'm thinking of pulling the Toyota faux chrome and repainting it black)

3M tape should work. Clean it really good with denatured alcohol.

My rear spoiler is a stick on unit from Ebay ($33 plus shipping, painted to match already). It uses 3M tape only (and the tape is already stuck to the spoiler from the manufacturer). It's been on for years now, no issues:

I wouldn't use Silicone at all. Just the tape is fine. And yes, with a bit of goo gone, you can remove all trace of it if you hate it.

Has to be the "King" of stick on trim...  Otherwise, I am no help.

Yep, that's pretty much what I usually think of when I hear "stick on trim".  You start out with a small spoiler, next thing you know you're dragging around 75lbs. of plastic and your car is "in memory of Uncle Cooter".

I gotta ask, “what’s the point?” A spoiler that small isn’t noticeable, isn’t effective, and only costs money.

Hey man, go big or go home. Form follows function. Blah blah blah.

If 3M tape won't hold it on, it was never yours to begin with.

Depending on airflow over the trunk, giving the trunk lip a sharper edge for air to separate from with the stick-on might reduce drag a hair.

I installed a stick on bug deflector on my 94 explorer.  It stuck on to the underside of the leading edge of the hood and wrapped up and round the leading edge of the hood.  I wiped the serfaces with isopropyl alcohol and applied the unit.  It was stuck there for the 10 years I had that vehicle.  My friend had the same vehicle and put the same bug deflector on but did not do the isopropyl alcohol wipe down and his came loose in less than a year.

I think the point is it makes Kazoo's penalty box look at little cooler to him. Not everyone is chasing that last tenth, especially on the drive to work.wink

That’s what I’m talking about. A “spoiler” that small may as well just be some weather stripping built up along the back. If you’re not going for effect, then you’re going for look. Now, I wouldn’t put a F&F park bench back there, but I would give it a substantial, tasteful spoiler that gives the impression “I’m into cars”. It’s like if your lady wants to get enhancements. Bigger is better, but biggest is not best, And what’s the point if you don’t notice a difference. These are all opinions. Lol.

In my opinion, a small spoiler along the edge of the trunk looks good.  That's it.  I want something Toyota didn't offer and I don't want to drill holes in the trunk, hence a small lip spoiler.  To my eye, Chris_V's trunk looks a little better with the spoiler than without it, and the one I bought cost exactly $33.00.  I'm not looking to transform the car, just make small changes to it.  If you're interested, I've made a few other changes to the car that are targeted towards making it a slightly better car.  Since I bought it, I've modified the air box for a couple extra HP, added a rear sway bar to make it handle a little better, and put snow tires on the stock wheels to make it a better winter beater.  I also put aftermarket wheels and wider Yoko s.drives on it to make it look and handle a little better.  Info here: yaris thread  Eventually, I'll probably add a leather shift boot and decent weighted knob to replace the plastic boot and crappy rubber shifter it came with.  That will probably be it.  Not looking to make it a Porsche beater at the track or "the most baller Yaris ever", I just want to personalize it a little bit and make it slightly better looking and driving than it came from the factory.

The factory spoiler on my 96 Impala SS is stuck on with tape.  It lasted 148k but its falling off now.

And since I’ve done nothing but criticize in your thread, I’ll help out by adding that my entire Louver system on the back window of the celica is held on by 3m heavy duty double sided tape. As already said, clean with alcohol. Then apply. The Louvers have been on there for five years now, and seen triple digit speeds at least three times I can remember. That tape is awesome stuff!

End result.  Pic is pretty crappy, but I'm happy with the result.  It looks pretty much factory.  Probably added at least 15hp too.  wink
