I had to run to Jacksonville yesterday for an appointment, so that meant a little more than an hour on I-95 heading north.
I’m cruising in the middle lane with traffic. Probably going 70-something. Say mid 70s.
I notice a familiar face in the rear-view mirror: a white Triumph TR6.
Hello, I don’t recall passing a TR6.
Then the TR6 moves left and motors right by me. Looked totally stock, down to the wheels and red line tires.
I paced him up to about 87. He ran solidly in the mid 80s until exiting somewhere south of Jax.
And I have a bit of stick time in Tim’s TR6. Fun car but maybe not my first choice for 80+ on the interstate. Even my Miata is way buzzy at that point.
I wonder, five-speed swap or OD?
I wonder it it was a TR-6 or TR-6 tin wrapped around something Japanese?

From the rear, it looked very TR6. Stock muffler, even.

Why don't I ever get cool things like this when I'm on I-95? I only ever get traffic and people who don't know how to use a blinker.
My guess is it had an overdrive............or a deaf driver.
That's like a way cooler version of watching a 10-year-old Altima or Prius with paper plates blasting by you.
Overdrive wound tite, radio on 11

It was kinda a similar vibe.

Doesn't Tim's TR6 have the Toyota 5-speed kit from Moss Motors in it? And it still seems revvy on the interstate?

I don't take my TR6 with O/D out very often on the highway other than the occasional Cars & Coffee across town, but I was shocked by how well it drove at highway speeds the first time I had it out. Can't say i got to the mid-80s but mid-70s were no problem and the RPMs were quite comfortable. Flick off the OD, not so much. Now staring at the bottom of every tractor trailer, monster SUV, or stupid a$$ dragging pick-ups is a different story....

You know, I haven’t driven it on the interstate.

I’d say similar regarding my 1.6L Miata.

I may have broken 100 mph in a TR6 while chasing down a Porsche 911 on I-66 in Virginia. It had an overdrive transmission, but also had a 4.55 diff and a Monza exhaust. That's probably responsible for at least half of my tinnitus.

This one was pulling nicely–and who knows for how long. I was with him for at least 20 miles, I’d guess. Maybe more. It was a chunk of my hourlong drive.
