Is therea dead horse in here? I thought I smelled one and I brought my dead horse beatin stick.
My neighbors have Harleys that are louder than the freight trains that go by a half block away. But both of them drown out the sound of our other neighbors fighting at 2 AM so I don't really mind.
I personally don't ride (other than pedal powered bikes), but if I did, I would not want anything to do with a Harley. I don't like it that one apparently is compelled to dress up like the Wild Hogs when they ride one. I don't want a vehicle that comes with its own costume. Now that I know that the engine shakes so much that it is hard to see at idle, that makes it even less desirable to me.

The blue bike makes more.......on just the wastegate spring. But if you look to the bottom front of the fairing, you can kind of see the open dump off the turbo.....it isn't anywhere close to as bad as harleys, as it is only LOUD at WOT, which means its gone very very quickly. The turbine might actually sound louder at that point.
My view on this is well known, so I won't be the broken fiddle.....but expect something similar if our group gets ticketed on our ride to Nashville, IN later this summer for noise.......evidently some cops are "enforcing" stricter than usual noise limits on only sport bikes. My bike isn't that loud, but the fireballs after shifts sure are.
Man that dead horse sure gets around. I'm pretty sure I saw him in the stance thread just a couple days ago.

Nah, theres a few dead horses around.....I haven't finished putting all the heads in people's beds yet either. Just wait, you'll get one in time....
Here to be devil's advocate. I'm a big big fan of loud pipes. I get that the circuit/autox community tends to be more sophisticated or whatever you want to call it, but I grew up around muscle cars/trucks. Nothing I love more than hearing a set of open headers tear a hole in the earth a mile away. Straight piped V8s, straight piped diesels, straight piped harleys, straight piped boxers, etc. I either have or will own them.
I recognize that sometimes it makes me an shiny happy person, but what can you do. I try to keep to idle or as close as possible in neighbourhoods/near open windows/cyclists/etc. But I like what I like, and making myself happy gives me more enjoyment than making you happy.
Another thing to consider: besides annoying everyone around you, loud cars/bikes/trucks/whatever will take a toll on your own hearing. Unless you don't mind saying, "What?" a lot when you get older, wear ear protection or put the damn mufflers back on.

It's got nothing at all to do with being more "sophisticated". It's got everything to do with not pissing off the general populace so much that they vote to ban whatever it is we happen to like.
Like they say about movies, video games, what have you: if we don't police ourselves, they will police us. And I bet you won't like it when they do.
Speaking of autoX rather than Harleys. Locally we had a very nice site to dodge cones and wear helmets a few years ago. There were a couple of marginally loud cars which irked local homeowner. Local homeowners complaints weren't handled particularly politely and as a result we (local group of go fast aficianados) lost said site. Sigh.
I think part of the problem is that coal rolling diesel pickups and v8s and Harleys with no mufflers are considered to be patriotic and all American, so no matter what anyone says some people will still like them.
There's a Harley dealer about 200 yards from my office. I run into the employees at the local quicky mart all the time. They don't run stock exhausts (stock anything, really) but all their bikes are considerably quieter than most of their customers. I imagine running straight pipes gets pretty old when you actually ride a lot.

Damn, that thread is too far. I think I'll just wait for the next one to come around. Meanwhile, where's a shaving thread I can make fun of the bald faces in?

Same thing happened to us. The location was even an airport.
Planes make noise then leave, cars go on and on and on.
There were also some incidents of members of a local autocross club shouting "wake up motherberkeleyer, wake up" over the P/A system at 8:00am on a Sunday. Inconsiderate louts indeed.
We got the location back but we're stock with an 89 (I think) db limit, it may even be less now, it's been a while since I've autocrossed.
A lot of these guys soon realize how much low end torque they're giving up and get creative with baffles or other improvised devices to keep the sound but regain some power.
There is a video on YouTube of a sportster guy with straight pipes. He has come up with many different types of baffles/eyebolt's/wire/whatever and he's testing all of them on camera to see which one sounds the best.
Every single one he tries still has that same horrible blraaaaap nasty sound that only straight pipes can make. But he's so proud of all the research he's done but doesn't even realize every single one sounds exactly as horrible as the one before it. It's actually pretty funny.
IMO, if you have to blip the throttle of your bike to be able to see gauges/the world, then maybe you should work on tuning it a little better so it doesn't shake your teeth out.

They come from the factory like that. It's designed in. I don't feel it in my hands or butt however my front wheel is jumping up and down about a half inch at idle. And yes I like it that way.
In reply to Bobzilla:
My 10r shakes at idle.......but thats due to the nasty cam profiles Kawa used in it. Literbikes sound good with a big nasty lope.
So... what you're saying is you WANT to ride a bike that pains you when sitting still and makes it impossible to see.
Why? I am honestly asking because I can't understand this train of thought.
In reply to Bobzilla:
Its all about image Bob.......and a very important part of that image is 'Murica.
OK, I'm hopefully legendary for bitching up a storm about limp Dick harly owners in these threads, but for once I'm not. Why? Well I'm in the UK right now and I've seen a few H.D's and guess what? they've all had full exhausts on them. No issue. What passes me off is the scooters. These British limp dicks think they're in the 60's and are pining for Brighton in 1965 and have no exhaust on their POS's making 200 db with their 1.025hp craps bikes. Real exhaust no issue, no exhaust should be punishable by road side execution in my book. Car, bike, truck whatever. Be considerate or luck off and die painfully

Nah, if that was true they'd all have shotguns onboard.
