So, we all know that the challenge has gone to 200tw classes. Locally, i also compete in those classes.
We have learned that the 200tw tires fall off as they age and heat cycle, and that older versions of them leave a lot on the table compared to new.
Im not ready, as i sure other folks are too, to drop $600-800 on a fresh set of tires. I have a couple sets of few season old 200tw tires.
In slicks, soaking is common to get more life out of old rubber. We have used crc belt dressing, hot lap soak, acetone, and others to mixed success.
Anyone tried to do 200tw stuff? What did you do, and how were the results? Im planning to do my few year old 225/50/15 rs4 for the neon, but haven't decided on what yet.
Softening chemicals will work on a 200tw too. I've done it with WD40 once, it worked but it took most of the first event and the drive to it to wear the oiliness off the tires...
So, how long did the improved grip last with the wd40? Application methods?
And has anyone actually done it to 200tw? Or am i the first here to think of it?
I kept the tires less than a year after the softening but it seemed to make a long-term change. I bought a jug of liquid WD40, poured some into a bowl and brushed it on the treads with a paintbrush, repeated every night for maybe 5 nights in a row, then hosed off the tires and put them on the car. In retrospect I probably should've wiped the tires down with an acetone-soaked cloth or scrubbed them with dish soap before running them to get the oily residue off faster. They still felt a little slippery well into the first autocross I drove to.
I have no real idea but I would think that soaking would certainly do something. Maybe less effective because of the harder compound? Maybe more of a difference, % wise, because of the harder compound?
My only experience is acetone on Hoosiers and that seems to help. I soak a rag and apply liberally to the tires a couple times a day the week leading up to the race weekend.
I'd also bet that someone, somewhere has soaked a non-race tire. I'd also bet that someone is a GRMer.
I used a commercial tire softener about ten years ago on my aging Falkens. (Formula V from Pegasus, IIRC) Based on the warning labels, the stuff was toxic as hell and it was a pain to use - apply, then wrap the tire with plastic wrap, repeat a bunch of times.
First autocross run I spun spectacularly before I figured out how greasy the tires were. Next 3 or 4 runs were great, then back to an old hard tire.
Not worth the time or effort.
For rs4, I find pushing them VERY hard will bring them back. I'm not sure how this works for autocross, but it works pretty well for endurance racing.

Are you sure about that?

Yeah man I'm not sure. I have some 4 year old Rival S that pulled >1.2G and took all abuse I gave them at a trackday this summer.
But I have no experience with softeners.
