I rode in a buddy's new Camaro a few weeks ago. Sounded NASTY (in a good way.) Asked him what he'd done to the exhaust, and turns out, he'd just pulled the mufflers.
I'd thought about it on the V but worried I'd be "that guy" in the neighborhood/that it might be annoying on the hwy, but at low RPM, the Camaro was surprisingly stock sounding.
Thoughts?
Take them off and try it. You can always put them back on.

I think you might be "that guy" but... try it. If it's too much go buy some Flowmaster 40s to knock it down at low RPMs and still howl when you get on it.

Went muffler delete w/ axle back Pype Bombs on the '05 S197, retained the cats and stock mid pipes tho. Nothin' crazy but makes all the right noises from idle on up, the way it oughta be, love it.
I'd give delete a shot. Like said, you could always reinstall.
if the "no mufflers" end up being too loud you might look at a Corsa system. The loud version of the corsa system sounds awesome on my buddies c5.
Electric cutouts. You can either be Miss Jackson or Janet, depending on your mood.
The old 9C1 had mufflers and resonators. When the mufflers rotted off, I just used the straight through resonators. Straight pipes, really. Quiet until you romped on it.
Friend of ours runs his '06 -V without mufflers. not loud. Sounds fantastic.
+1 for remove the muffler section and see how it sounds. Replacing the mufflers with straight pipes will sound similar.

I installed the Corsa on my CTS-V, and while it sounded amazing, it actually dropped a couple hp on the dyno. It was also 7 pounds heavier than the stock exhaust. I'd probably still do it again, though. It sounded that good.
On the CTS-V, the entire catback is a single piece, so you'll have to cut the mufflers off--you can't just unbolt them. They should be easy enough to seal back up with band clamps, but it's something to be aware of.

A friend of mine deleted the mufflers on his V. It was on the loud side, but sounded great!

Poop starts a thread worried about being "that guy." 18 posts later, "berkeley the neighbors." I love it.
Absolutely no way to tell (except someone else that has the same set up, if they speak up) without trying it. Costs a bit to try but at least you'll know. If you do it and it is too loud, you can look at inserting a low restriction small muffler or resonator to tame it a bit.
I removed an intermediate muffler on my old Italian beast as it was far to polite, and now it sounds glorious!
Test it out on the highway before you completely decide. The 2,000-RPM drone of the American V8 without chambered mufflers can get quite annoying.

This is what has me leaning toward cutouts on my wagon. As much as I want it to sound like the glorious beast that it is, I've grown to love the quiet highway cruising.

is there a cutout that doesn't leak now? Last I check even the swanky electrical ones would leak after awhile. I like the thought of cutouts, but can't stand exhaust leaks.

I expect they would require periodic maintence.
V8 with straight pipes isn't all that loud, so long as you drive it gently.
