On today’s episode the left inner tie rod on the Sierra was getting exponentially worse. So this morning I head out to fix it. Pop the inner boot band loose and I’m covered in p/s fluid. Inner seal was blown and housing looked like it had been beaten with a hammer. So out comes the rack and. $40 fix just jumped to a $300.
On other news I may have a line on a Gastropod the wife likes.
So it’s not just shady independent shops that turn your cheap fix into a money grab?

Dude. This shop sucks. I need to find a new mechanic.

Yeah, your current mechanic keeps trying to sleep with your wife!

And we might have to steal his car......
That one sold before I could get to it. $800 and needed a fender that cost $62. I could have gone hog wild on suspension and tires and still been under budget.
Im still coming to the challenge this year. Period. Whether I bring a car or not is yet to be decided.
I didn’t know 3 door Accent GTs were a thing (in that generation) and now I do. Cool!

A fantastic decision!
I have recommended for a long time to "go and see" to anyone interested. I went my first year as "crew". I thought I understood the event beforehand but "going" answered all the questions and filled in the blanks on a lot of other stuff.
Since we are going to Hong Kong for 2 weeks this summer I can’t do many car related things this year before September because of a lack of vacation time. So the challenge is my carvana supplement this year. If I can find an appropriate car (read: Korean) then awesome.
Wont lie I’m a bit bummed. I wanted this one. 2400lbs, 110 hp and Miata/civic bolt pattern/wheel sizes.

That sounds like an interesting and unexplored SCCA H-Production chassis

I’ve long known about you and your love of Korean cars. This is a kind of a threadjack but I’m curious if you can tell me what you like and why and even what you’d recommend as a fun, manual daily driver for $3,000.
If this is too far afield a question for this thread, I completely understand. (I’ve been a closet Hyundai/Kia fan for quite a while ever since I owned a first gen Tiburon)
I mean look at this, it’s an auto but I’m looking at the price:
My likes:
cheap to buy second hand compared to Honda/toyota
easy to work on. 10/12/14/17/19/21mmno exceptions.
Parts are cheap.
You get more for your money in the used market.
There are downsides though. Aftermarket parts aren’t as plentiful but there are a lot of upgrades within the family tree. Upgraded brakes from larger models, sway bar swaps coil overs from different models etc. takes some work to find what fits. Most normal power adders don’t get you a ton of power. Rust. Jeebus the rust is bad with these cars.
But.... a decent set of wheels/tires and some springs/struts make these a lot of fun for not much money.
At $3k I’d be looking for a spectra5 in the best condition I could find, some H&rs and some 17x7.5 with 225/40’s
My main problem with the newer Rios and accents is to get a manual trans you do not get cruise and sometimes ac. I have a limit for my comfort
No A/C is actually a good thing in my opinion. Cruise control is a MUST however.
In reply to ebonyandivory :
My step-son has a 2010 automatic & I had a 2007(same generation) manual. Unsurprisingly the Auto is much slower & less fun than the manual. I absolutely beat on mine for 100kmi like it owed me money.
The timing belt interval is 60k, while the water pump is due with every other belt. I replaced the front pads once or twice, shocks once, I tossed a ~$40 eBay CAI on it, which really woke it up. The a/c clutch locked up, the CD player quit working, and by 160k the front control arm bushings were shot, but there were no serious failures.
In reply to Pete Gossett :
The wife’s Rio of that generation had the crap beat out if it before us. By 110k it had an all new suspension and we sold it to a friends brother with 140+k. It was a great car just never lift! The auto was tragic
