So I have progressively been getting rid of oil leaks and problems on my 97 na8. She blows blue smoke on cold start up. I have done several things such as seafoam, PCV valve and tube, and a host of other things. I’m used to the car using A little oil.

My new problem Is the last two times I have checked the dipstick on this car the dipstick oil is a few inches above the full line on the dipstick. I wipe, recheck, and it’s still over full.

Any ideas as to how I can be leaking oil and yet my cup runneth over?

I have fixed an o ring oil leak at the oil cooler, the CAS oil ring, the valve cover, the pcv valve and hose and grommet. Two leaks left are the front of the oil pan and the front main seal.

Have you overfilled it? Does the oil smell like gas?

Aka- the NA8 miata. The smells fine, no chocolate milk in the radiator or the valve cover cap. And no fuel smell.  The only thing I can think of is the seafoam I added to the crankcase, but that was only 1/3 of a 16oz bottle. Oil change coming soon. I just want to make sure it’s not some random Miata thing I don’t know about. Or some pcv system deal.

Pull the drain plug after its sat for a while. If theres coolant in it, it will come out first. You can quick reinstall it if only oil comes out if oil change isnt due yet.

UOA will tell you if there’s oil, fuel or some other contaminant in there.

Simplest first, is the car just overfull?  Have you been adding oil?

Is the ground absolutely flat? In my experience it seems like Miatas are very sensitive to this. In the regard that, I was at a dyno day, went to check the fluids a bit before it was my time on the dyno and there was no oil on the dipstick. Yikes! Very slight downhill grade in the parking lot, didn't think much of it. Drive to go pick up a jug of oil, buy some, go back out and pull the dipstick before adding any and now it's right at the full line.

Too much oil in the crankcase is the leading cause of too much on the dipstick, lol.

Funny-ish story -- my first Lemons race on the TR8 team and I'm first stint.  I check the oil and it's halfway between the low and high mark, so I fill it about 1/8" above the top mark per my experience with Toyotas and BMWs...you know, just to prevent oil starvation.

First green flag lap and I smoke out the whole race track and have to come in.  We try to drain out the extra oil in paddock and drop the drain plug in the CMP sand and lose about half the hot oil, as well as baptizing one of our team in warm oil.

I'm not allowed to check the oil anymore.
