So my buddy is getting married at the end of the summer and we are working on a Top Gear inspired bachelor party. The idea is four of us will fly from Texas to Philadelphia, split up into two teams, and buy two beaters, around a $1,000, to drive back to Texas. We plan to camp, and couch surf our way back stopping at some cool places on the way. The current route has us going through Baltimore, DC, Mooresville, Tail of the Dragon, Atlanta, and New Orleans. We are looking at going the last weekend of may or first week of June. We need some suggestions on places to stop, maybe a couch to surf on, garage to use, or any leads on some cheap fun cars. Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

Here is our current plan of attack.

Awesome plan. Hope the cars get you back in time for the wedding or the bride will kill you all, though.

Phil Wenneck: Listen, we berkeleyed up. We lost Doug.

Tracy Garner: What? We're getting married in five hours.

Phil Wenneck: Yeah... that's not gonna happen.

How are you going to talk the strippers into this, anyway?

Seriously though, this sounds pretty awesome.

Yeah I initially pitched the idea to do the BABE rally, but we would rather go at our own pace and do our own thing.

Just be sure not to steal any tigers...

In Atlanta you should see if you can get your cars on the track at Road Atlanta, or to an AutoX down at Turner Field, doing either with $1000 beaters you're driving across country would validate your trip by itself...

I will offer tools and possibly a couch to sleep on in northern OTP Atlanta. Sounds like a blast, I may have to do this one day.

Whoa. I just heard Sam's end of this story in the lab in Thompson the other day. Small world.

Just better make sure and send your tools ahead of you, I wouldn't want to take a trip like that unarmed.

If you happen to re-route through NW Arkansas I have extra couches, 2 1/2 car garage, tools, beer, and auto parts connections....!

Is Philly a good place to buy a beater?
Does PA have required vehicle inspections?
Can you get temp tag plates without inspection?
Are temp tags reasonably priced in PA?

The Indianapolis 500 takes place on May 30th.

Make sure you are there the night before the race. I can think of no better place for a car-related Bachelor party. Infield tickets are cheap, and readily available.

If this is going to have elements of a "traditional" bachelor party, make sure to take the groom-to-be to the Wild Cherry. (Crawfordsville Rd. just West of Georgetown) Those "ladies" are sure to make him appreciate his soon to be wife!

Dunno about Philly/PA but across the bridge in NJ you can find good beaters. NJ will issue a 20 day temp tag for $10 as long as you have proof of insurance (for any car in your name) No inspection required for the 20 day temp tag.

There is a red cross vehicle resale lot in Mt Holly NJ where they sell the dontated cars, there's usually a few sub $1000 beaters available there.

It does sound like you are doing the dates and route for BABE though, mebbe we'll see you guys out there somewhere.

I went kart racing for my bachelor party at F1 Boston indoor and outdoor track (arrive and drive). Much more fun IMO than wasting days driving a POS looking at the landscape slowly going by - or stopping to fix it.

Kart racing would be fun, but this would be an adventure! For my next bachelor party I would like to do something like this. I probably shouldn't mention that to my wife.

Exactly, it is an adventure. Its like trying to explain BABE to people who dont get it. Either you get the adventure road trip or you dont. If you get it, you'll have fun with something like this :)

While Kart racing would be fun everyone going on this trip has racing experience. Three of us worked in Star Mazda together and me and the groom both race Spec Miata. Not that Karting is not fun, but this is more about an adventure.

Thanks for the tips on the cars. I think finding cars will be our biggest hurdle.

I can find 5-10 sub $1000 bangers in my area of NJ (near Philly) on almost any day of the week that would most likely make the trip for you.

As long as you aren't in search of a specific car its pretty easy to find cars that will make it (hint Ford Tempo)

Let me know if you have any specific requirements and I'll keep my eyes open.
