Yeah I am not sure where everyone thinks this car can weight 2300 lbs. My 84 RX-7 comes in at 24XX.
Sure you can put in Aluminum body panels and suspension components but you still have airbags at least 17 inch wheels and other amenities that are demanded in a modern day car.

My 2.5RS weighs ~2900 pounds, has awd, and runs 15's in the 1/4 mile. So, with 3000 pounds or less rwd, it should be quite the sprightly car.
Consider, original miata or a corolla and their power to weight ratios. This one is not far off. Also consider the new miata. In Canada, the base model is a ridiculars $28k without destination or taxes! I'd rather an S2000 please!

The Miata is 24xx lbs and the 370z is 31xx lbs. Miata wheelbase is 91in. 370Z wheelbase is 100.4in FT-86 is 101 in. A flat four is likely to be a little lighter than a V6. I don't think it's unreasonable to hope that it is below 2800 lbs. It may be difficult for it to be 2600 as I stated in my last post, however. The e36 had a 106 in wheelbase, and it was at 3200 lbs.
If it does crest 3000 lbs, then I'd much rather have the extra hp that a 370Z, or just stick with the 350Z and figure out a way to lighten it (in a class-legal way). By the time this is out, it'll be competing with 2 year used 370Z's at the same price...
I wonder how it will compare against the Hyuandai Genesis Coupe.

Even if they do build that thing, it will never come to US shores. As awesome as a RWD sub compact would be to have over here, the other 95% of the general public, looking for a sub compact, would probably want FWD, and Toyota wouldn't see the gamble in doing something different.
Now, as for why they're using the Subie engine, my thought is this: Besides trucks, I don't think Toyota has a single RWD model. Yeah you can take certain FWD engines and turn them around, but they weren't engineered to do so. The Subaru flat four is longidutially mounted, and I think since Toyota was looking at keeping this car cheap, they decided it would be cheaper to use someone elses engine, than design one clean sheet, which would have increased costs on the car.
That's just my theory, though.

They're also FWD, and haven't had as much safety bloat, being a gen or two old.
Current-gen FWD c-segment cars are hovering around 2600-3000lbs. Front engined RWD cars will have at least the additional weight of a large driveshaft and mounting hardware in the rear, adding at least 100 lbs to the design.
I think that market (safety, NVH and in-car entertainment) demands are going to make it rough to get this car significantly less than 3000 lbs. The Scion tC starts out over 3000 itself without any options.
